R32 rear brake upgrade project

Well it's not just because it's front wheel drive. Any car with too much rear bias will be twitchy under heavy braking.
...too much front bias can be bad as well.

roastpuff,
that's cool. Thanks for the calculations. But you did it using the stock rear brake system size. Can you do it using the R32 size?

R32 rear brakes with GTI front brakes? I'll try and work one up.

I did it with the stock system to illustrate the bias that was designed in... that at full brake there is far more front brake bias than rear brake bias.

So I decided that I'm going to paint the hubs on all the rotors using black high-heat caliper paint. Because the front and rear rotors are slightly different, it'll help bring them all together. Plus it'll transition well with my black OZ wheels.
I'm going for something similar to what Adam's Rotors offers, just homemade. Great product by the way!

Painted the rotor hubs last night. They look a lot better than I anticipated. Crappy cell phone pics really don't do them justice.
Now granted the rotors on the right are used, so they're not in as good of shape...

I can highly recommend the 310mm rear brake upgrade on the Mk6, I ran these with a set of 6 pot AP racing fronts and it really helped balance things out :)

Hello,

Where did you find the AP's? I'm looking for a set for my MK6. Any links?

Thanks

So the rear R32 brakes are installed. I only have one pic posted on my build thread in the member car journals forum. More to come.
Anyways, after seeing the rear GTI rotors compared to the R32 ones, I'd recommend this upgrade to anyone. I'd have to assume that the size and vented vs. non-vented makes a big difference. Of course I have nothing to back that up.
In terms of the appearance, the rear setup now appears more beefed up and balanced with the front.
And with the black painted hubs all around, it really brings the car together.
Regarding the install, Autotech did NOT include the R32 anti-rattle clips with this kit... So we (me and my buddy Jesse) had to modify the GTI anti-rattle clips to accommodate the thicker rotor. This merely consisted of placing the clips in a vice and using a grinder to shave them down.

this is interesting... glad to see that someone posted the bias, as it is very typical for most cars to have the primary bais towards the front. I may do a stoptech or R32 upgrade for the fronts only some day, or perhaps do both front and rear R32, but typically you want the additional stopping power up front.

Yes and yes - front upgrade for me some day down the line probably.
But I'd still recommend the R32 rears.
It's almost embarrassing how thin the OEM rotors are. I should have taken pics!

yeowza! how much heavier are the new ones? did it seem that substantial?

Yeah, I may just do the cheaper option of the R32's all-around, or go with the Stoptechs front and R32's rear, we'll see.. its on the longer list, lol...
