Passed Driver's Ed
Anyone know a reliable shop to get Timing Chain replacement done? I would like preferably in the Peel region area. Also if someone has done it what is the usual cost?

Thanks

A few posts down someone asked about a good shop for a turbocharger replacement. I don't want to sound like a broken record and I don't have anything to gain by recommending these guys, but AST (Auto Select Tuning) in Brampton can do this job with their eyes closed..

They specialize in VW and Audi and know their stuff. They can do it all when it comes to VW's and they also fabricate so if something isn't right they will make it right..

They stand behind their work.. It's so hard to find honest mechanics that know their stuff. These guys are reliable and that goes a long way with me..

Tell them Richard with the sleeper Golf R and MK1 Audi TT sent you, maybe you get a touch better deal! :)

Thanks, I went to AST, got the updated tensioner. You were right The guys at AST are very friendly. I paid $500 all together. My old Tensioner was still in good shape, but it was really bugging me as theres no way of knowing when the oil pressure will drop and screw up the tensioner. But now I have piece of mind and dont have to worry as much.

Thanks Again

Looking to get this done on my '12 with 141K km on it. Were your guides and chain in fine condition, and the cover re-installed as opposed to replaced at that price?
I'd appreciate it if you would please let me know more details about the parts and labour here. Thanks.
Also what kind of turn around time is involved?

Hey Sorry for the late reply,

$500 only covered the cost of tensioner and labour, its about a 3-4hour job. Labour is $100/h. Hence the cost. My timing chain had no damage, so I opted not to go for a full timing chain replacement, just the tensioner. I believe they replaced the cover (Not 100% sure I have to check my receipt), they did replace the seals. Also you can give them a call, they are very friendly, and they will give you a quote.

Thanks for your reply. Please let me know about the cover and the rest of the items on your bill. Much appreciated.

Below are some scans I made that may be useful to some here.

The three chain guides or "rails" listed should be picture numbers 8, 10 & 13.

If the upper chain and cover are both OK to re-use, would it still be a good idea to install the three new rails/guides since even at full list price you are only looking at $72.50 for all three of them?

New cover seals (numbers 28 & 29) are no-brainers I suppose. It would be nice to save on the expensive cover itself cost, but then again, not at the expense of future leaks.

Good info!

Are you having problems or are you doing this as preventative maintenance?

I'm wondering if this is something I should do on my 2011.

This is not a "should do" but a MUST Do.

The Timing Chain Tensioner failed or Tiguan at 122k km with regular oil changes and dealer serviced.

No problems. Just fear.

Edit: If this known faulty or "very prone to failure" part (upper timing chain tensioner) is a known ticking time-bomb, sales script such as this are very effective at getting me to open the wallet:

"Keeping tension on your timing chain is imperative for keeping your cams turning properly. If some slop develops in your chain because of a poor tensioner, the timing set can skip a tooth, causing catastrophic damage and potentially ruining your engine. This replacement can keep everything tight.

The chain runs against this tensioner which keeps your chains tight on the cam gears and crank. It makes sure no teeth are missed and your engine stays in time. Quiets loud chains."

Just trying to pin down which GTA shop to use.

Did you use your e-brake on that thing? Was it the electronic one?

Thanks.

Fear is my thing too...but I'm not sure putting ~$1100 + into a car that's worth maaaaaaybe $9 grand is the best use of those funds, but I can certainly be convinced.

I've had literally zero symptoms although I realize this is a warningless failure.

If I could DIY I would definitely consider it.

OEM Updated Timing Chain Tensioner - $87.88
Timing Cover Sealant - $25

Hope this helps in choosing which place to go to.

Well, got her done this past week, at just shy of 143K km. Went to a place very local, less than 7 km from home - a bit closer (~10x) than to Brampton. I wanted to get a now and future go-to VW specialist that was convenient and these guys - Auto Select Repair on Gorham Street in Newmarket came highly recommended by a long time co-worker Porsche guy (and senior structural engineer) who had been making the long trek from Pickering to see these Newmarket guys for more than a decade. VW, Audi & Porsche specialists with glowing reviews as far as I could find.

A new cover and dipstick tube were needed and I also sprang for the new style chain 06K 109 158 BE. Also got my own Zimmermann front rotors and Bosch pads installed in the front and my Bosch pads slapped in the rear with caliper/saddle service all around. Exhaust mid-car clamp installed too, had it in my trunk waiting for the rusty one to fail - never happened but all good now.

My old 06H 109 467 tensioner is stamped 235 11 which I assume is an Aug 23, 2011 production date which matches my 2012 GTI's build date of Sep 2011. I wonder which tensioner revision this was. [EDIT: Info here.] In any case, all set now with the new 06K 109 467 K. And a trusted garage to go to.

Sorry I didn't see your question. Yes we used the Electronic one. I'm not familiar with autos too much but thought it wise to use the Electronic brake instead of resting the weight of the Tiguan on the auto tranny. I changed the rear brake pads before, retacting the brake pistons using VAGCOM or OBD11 is the only real difference.
