Review: 034MOTORSPORT STAINLESS STEEL SUBFRAME LOCKING COLLAR UPGRADE KIT

About two months ago, I decided that I was fed up with my half-crushed Tyrolsport Deadset Kit and decided to go ahead and buy the 034Motorsport Kit.

History:
When the Tyrolsport Front Deadset Kit originally came out, I was very quick to order and install it. During the initial install, I had not noticed that the bushings were different for the top and the bottom. Well, as the bushings are very brittle, this crushed parts of them. I talked to Tyrolsport to try and get new bushings, which they were able to send me at a fair price. When I went to reinstall the kit, the passenger side frame rail where the ARP bolt got stripped (See: http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69960). Unfortunately, when I spent the countless hours trying to get the bolt back out, the bushings (in the correct position) got crushed again. However, this time Tyrolsport wanted me to pay for a full kit to get the bushings. I eventually helicoiled the frame rails and used the semi-crushed bushings. Only the inner ring of the bushings were left for the 2 18mm frame rails. Unfortunately, the ARP bolts would not go in fully with the helicoil, and one broke/snapped halfway up. So I had half of a stainless steel bolt stuck in the frame rail. On the other side, I used an Audi bolt which went in with no problems. I spent a few weeks with a half-sheared bolt on one of the frame rails before buying a powerful drill and stainless steel drill bits. I drilled out the stainless steel bolt. That was a mess. Since then, I had been running the Tyrolsport kit with Audi bolts all over and a few half-crushed bushings. 034Motorsport came out with their kit which used Audi bolts and Stainless Steel Collars. I thought that was a much better idea than the aluminum ones that Tyrolsport uses.

Product Description
034Motorsport is pleased to present the Stainless Steel Subframe Locking Collar Upgrade Kit for the MkV/MkVI Volkswagen Golf/Jetta/GTI/GLI/R32/Passat/Rabbit & 8P Audi A3! Designed to center the subframe using precision-engineered stainless steel insert bushings and large-diameter bolts, this kit eliminates clunks caused by the subframe shifting, and increases chassis rigidity for improved handling performance.

This kit addresses the very common subframe clunk/pop/creak that presents itself when taking slow turns, entering driveways, coming to a stop, and starting from a standstill. Unlike the band-aid shims used in the factory Volkswagen Technical Service Bulletin (TSB V-401202 & Others) repair, these locking collars and upgraded bolts are a permanent, affordable solution to address the fundamental issue with the factory subframe design.

The upper and lower collars in our kit are specifically machineded to locate the subframe and bolts perfectly and ensure hassle-free installation. The supplied bolts feature factory-correct tips and thread engagement points to prevent thread stripping. Unlike other kits on the market that use softer alloys, our Mk5/Mk6 VW Golf/Jetta/GTI/GLI/R32/Passat/Rabbit, Audi A3, Subframe Locking Collars are made from stainless steel to prevent deformation and ensure a lifetime of performance.

Installation is very straightforward and can be performed in approximately one hour. No permanent modification to the subframe is required, and this upgrade completely reversible.

Features:
CNC-Machined Stainless Steel Locking Collars
Application-Specific Design for Both Upper & Lower Locking Collars
Engineered to Properly Locate (Center) Factory Front Subframe & Eliminate Shifting/Clunks
Includes New Large-Diameter Subframe Bolts to Prevent Loosening
Improves Chassis Rigidity & Handling Performance
Addresses Volkswagen Subframe Knocking Noise TSB V-401202 & Others Permanently!
Will Not Cause Additional NVH Transfer Inside Cabin
Easy, Straightforward Installation Takes Approximately 1 Hour!

Collars and Bolts

What I really liked about the 034Motorsport kit is that it includes all of the collars AND the bolts. The Tyrolsport Kit only came with the 2 center bolts, so I had to source the Audi bolts myself. On top of that, the Tyrolsport Kit is more expensive.

The quality of the collars was excellent. Stainless steel is pretty solid. I had no worries about these collars crumbling or coming apart.

The Install

The install was super easy. I did have a lot more experience than before of course. The bolts went right in, everything lined up perfectly. It was pleasantly easy to install. When I was installing the Tyrolsport Kit, the top of the aluminum collar would keep stripping off with the bolt and getting in the way of the frame rail. The Tyrolsport kit was a very unnecessarily difficult install just to get the bolts in. Keep in mind that I did have the V1 kit, so they may have changed things to help with this issue.

Conclusion
Overall, I have had no issues at all with this kit. The collars are supremely solid and high quality, and having the bolts included at a low price is a great bonus. If I had known, I would have waited for this kit to come out. Hindsight is always 20/20. I HIGHLY recommend this kit over any other.

Thanks for reading! ;)

Great review. I don't have any clunks yet but this kit is on my radar.

and another thing added to the list ><

We have installed about a dozen of these at the shop. It's a no brainier upgrade during a front sway bar or clutch installation. The reduction in chassis groan and improvement in feel over harsh bumps is always immediately apparent.

Funny these are all copies of tyrols V1 of it the newer version is improved, SS a good material choice so 034 no issue but not the ecs aluminum, they will be even more brittle and are going to corrode right to the subframe.

I have used my tyrol ones on now a third car without issue fwiw.

You do realize the subframe is already aluminum??

Exactly my point they will weld themselves in nicely

Wrong, when you put stainless collars in contact with an aluminum sub frame you will get galvanic corrosion caused by the mixing of dissimilar metals. Aluminum to aluminum is the closest you will get to a corrosion protection. Furthermore if you dont want them to get jammed to the subframe use a little bit of anti seize on the collars themselves but not on the bolts. You get proper dry torque specs and no seizing of the aluminum collars.

This is not my opinion this is 5 years of mechanical and materials engineering speaking. Take it or leave it.

Cheers.
