ok, few thousand miles (currently at 91800) and a year later, still having MPG issues, not horrible, but not what i know it could be. (i did do intake swap around 88k , August 2024, and quick carbon clean since it was about 10k miles since last cleaning, also new MAP sensor in March, around 2k miles ago)
week ago replaced the MAF (easiest part to replace), also "re-clocked" it to 11, since i had it hidden at the 6 position. No noticeable change in power or economy. I figured this may be the case since it was in this position for 10k+ miles with no issue in MPG.
last night I changed O2 sensor, plugs and coil packs. I wanted to do them separate to see if one specific was the culprit, but also didnt want to foul something up if one was causing an issue.
O2 sensor was original, approaching 100k miles so not a bad thing to change, was only 75 bucks so seemed like a no brainer.
spark plugs probably had only 15-20k miles on them, same 1675 NGKs. I thought i gapped them to .028" but the old measured at .030"~.031" ... new ones adjusted and installed at a tight .028" (feeler gauge)
Coil packs were replaced around 36k miles ago (56k on vehicle), R8 red tops i got from FCP euro. New ones are Delphi R8 units.
First drive after the updates and MPG seems significantly better. 20 mile run, with traffic, have been getting 24-28 at best, today got 30MPG, havent been able to do that in same scenario even trying hard. .... we will see what tank average ends up, but it is looking hopeful.
Low RPM power seems more smooth, transitions seem better, could be part placebo, but it definitely "feels" better.
*Note on the FCP euro parts. I question their legitimacy. R8 coil packs showed up bulk pack, no packaging. Bought a VW OE heater core for my passat, box said made in USA, heater core said made in mexico. So part the reason i replaced the coil packs was me wondering if they were knockoffs.
