Tiguan anyone?

PENROSE

Haven't been around in a while, but some of you might remember me and that I sold my '10 GTI about 7-8 months ago to a guy on Vortex.

I bought an AWD G37 sedan and while it is a really nice car....it's just not for me. My wife will be getting rid of her Murano in a few months, and I think I am giving her the Infinity.

I don't want to wait for the MK7 GTI and, although I really liked my MK6, I really would like to stick with something that is AWD.

If the R came with the DSG....I would have one. But here in the US, it doesn't, and I do not want/will not have a manual tranny.

So....I started thinking about an AWD Tiguan? And was wondering if anyone here went from a GTI to a Tiguan...or vice versa?

Right after I bought my GTI, I tried to get my wife to get a Tiguan....but she got a loaded Murano instead.

What I want to know is if a Tiguan is "mod"able? And if so...how much? Can you KO4 a Tiguan? Would the auto tranny hold up? If I got one I would have to go Stage 2 at least...preferrably KO4...would be a nice sleeper. I would most likely look for a used/CPO 2011-2012 SEL 4motion with low miles (25k mi or less)

Anyone have any experience/advice/comments about the Tiguan?

Thanks.

I miss my GTI.

Or this one:

I was really not impressed by the loaner I had. Especially its numb skulled automatic.

Yo Penrose, GET THE TIGUAN.

1st off re: the Automatic.. VW has since fixed the issue. There was actually a TSB on the '11 and early '12 Tiguans re: low gear 'lugging' essentially, the transmission being in 6th gear when it should have been in 4th or whatever and general dimwitted behavior. They fixed it w/the current year model. My wife and I just leased a brand new '13 Tiguan today and I love the automatic in it as does my wife, and thats coming from 2 people who drove nothing but standard trans for 20 years.. My GTI is still a stick which I love but its very nice having an ATX in the fam. Sport is ballsy, shifts quick and holds gears, allowing intuitive engine braking etc., D is pretty much mush balls like every version of 'D' on the planet but is fine for plodding around in traffic or 6th gear freeway cruising and manual mode is good w/out that jerk you sometimes get with shitty ATX manual modes.. Sport also rev matches downshifts.. Not bad for a slushbox. Not to mention the slush + turbo is a nice feel as it keeps you right in the sweet spot.

I can't say enough good things about the Tiguan and if you get 4Motion SE or whatever that is one sick car. But for the money, you could get into a CPO Q5. The 4motion Tiguans are pretty pricey.

That's the weak point for sure.

Used Q5? Those have the Tiptronic at least.

the 6 spd auto in the Tig has tiptronic

If you got tired of the sedan I doubt going into a soccer mom mobile is going to be any better. ;)

I honestly liked the drive of our old 05 RAV4 much better.

I see a trend. The grass is not always greener. I too have thought of straying...to a BMW. However these threads make me realize there's just something about the gti.

I just got my mom to get a 2013 Tiguan S 4motion. It's a nice car, but I have to say it's a completely different beast with the automatic compared to the DSG in my GTI. I honestly thought with the same engine, it would have a little more oomph in acceleration and pull harder, at least somewhat similar to the GTI. It was definitely not nearly the same at all. It's nice and smooth, and has a taller 6th gear so you don't rev so high at highway speeds, but I found it to be lacking in the sporting department. As a SUV it drives well and has a good drivetrain. The slushbox kinda is slushy coming from a DSG, and there's certainly a bit more body roll obviously.

To clarify, my selling my Tiguan has nothing to do with the performance parts. It LOVED the K04, AT never slipped, worked great. My recommendation to you is to DO IT, you'll love it.

No that v6 wasn't an option in 05. But it was smaller and nimbler in that body style. The v6 in the new ones is quite impressive though. Had been the fastest thing in Toyotas lineup for awhile heh.

Test drove a FWD Tiguan SE for my cousin a few weeks ago. She was coming from a 2010 CC with the DSG and I have my GTI with the DSG. The standard 6AT in the Tiguan is AWFUL. It's slow and doesn't really keep the engine in the torque band; it shifts sooner for efficiency. Sport mode holds the gears too long. Aside from that, there's too much body roll, the 2.0T is unrefined and loud (!), and I simply can't justify driving a Tiguan over a Q5 with either the 2.0T or the VR6 (albeit a year or two older) or even better, a 2008 .:R32 with the DSG.

*edit* Oh yeah. She ended up with a 2013 Volvo S60 T5 :iono:
