Transmission Options?

i won't shite on anyone who ordered DSG...i have driven it and it is very cool...its still an automatic transmission though (please don't anyone enter into a diatribe on DSG, no manual clutch = automatic in my mind).

to me it is a shame to have an automatic transmission in a performance car... less pleasurable...

Thanks for all the perspective, everyone!

The main reason I am looking at the TDI/GTI are because I wanted a safe car that is very well built, with close attention to detail, quiet interior with good sound system, and FUN to drive.

I had a 2001 Firebird that I turned into a suspension monster that I took out for casual auto-x fun. Now, I have a prius, and while the gas mileage is awesome, there's not much fun or comfort inside. I think the Golf models have the right "blend" of everything I want.

That said, I've never owned a manual but it seems fun, (after the learning curve), though possibly annoying when I'm not driving hard (which is 95% of the time).

And again, I have other people who will need to drive the car, and I don't know if I'll want them learning manual on my car =(

Hate to break it to you....it has two manual clutches.

here we go with the DSG lessons...i am familiar with the technical specifications of the vehicle.

i'll be more specific with my language:

A clutch that is manually actuated by the left leg and foot of the driver (in the United States, right foot and leg in the remainder of the English speaking world), and a gearbox that has gears which are manually selected by a mechanism found in the center console, which moves not only toward the front and rear of the vehicle, but also laterally as the ratio is selected.

right there with you. well built, sensible car that is a lot of fun. that why i chose the GTI. to me changing gears manually has never been an annoyance. even in traffic.

Also note that the manuals today aren't really the manuals of years back.

Just a note. I would have been fine with either, though my wrist would be unhappy (Basically I draft on the computer all day).

Plus the fact there were no manuals nearby.

I work in an IT department, so I spent my entire day at a computer responding to emails or answering the Help Desk telephone, so I know what you mean...

Fortunately, I haven't had any wrist problems yet, but I am only 22. My problem tends to be in my neck from sitting/slouching in my chair...

LUMBAR TO THE RESCUE!!!

I honestly can't decide between Manual/Auto.

The DSG is probably the coolest automatic.. But I've never owned a manual car, they are less expensive to own/repair, generally better mileage because they're lighter, give the drive more to do while driving (though, could make things unsafe if driver is constantly fumbling the ipod for music, etc)

I don't know. It's a mystery which one I'll get. I'm torn.

I dunno, I have to replace the clutch a lot in my fathers and sisters car a lot while my last auto I only had to add some fluid once in 3 years.

Also I have wrist issues and I am only 25. I have to wear a brace and take some time off in order to tame it.

Nobody is gonna hate whatever option you get. Manual is fun. DSG can be just fun. Its really a great way to down shift mainly to overpower. Thats really the ONLY I enjoy in driving and you can get that in both trannys.

if you cant decide, go for DSG, there's a lot to like about it, I've done 85K miles in an A3 DSG and still think it great. I'm waiting on a manual GTD, I miss the control of a proper clutch. DSG type boxes are set to explode on popularity, you might as well try it now instead of later......I reckon each time I spec a new car I'll alternate between DSG and Manual, either works for me..I think it should cost less.

I'm just messing with you...I owned a 2003 BMW 330 ZHP 6-spd for almost 4 years prior to buying my 2010 GTI.

I really enjoyed my 6 speed for the whole time I owned my BMW...However, I think the DSG transmission is just more fun and faster to drive.

The DSG is the most expensive to own and repair of the two.

unless you plan on doing the repairing and maintainence of it yourself.

DSG maintainence doesn't apply unless you're 35k miles +

i thought you lot had right hand drive...apologies

Dude - pedal layout is the same throughout the world. Gas on the right, brake in the middle, clutch on the left. It doesn't flip around when you go right hand drive or left hand drive.

That's what he meant.
