Un-Knowledgeable Sales People

Un-Knowledgeable is putting it nicely. My salesman was awesome at getting me into the GTI I wanted at a price I could afford, but he couldn't answer questions and wasn't very helpful.

I asked him why they did away with the Keyless Entry for the 2014 model. His response? "It still has it!" as he shows me the unlock button on the remote . . .

When I put it in Sport mode on the test drive, it shifted on its own, I inquired about this, and he didn't even try to answer me. He didn't tell me that the DSG shifter moves to the right to go into manual mode. I put on 20 miles in Sport mode wondering why the hell it was occasionally shifting on its own . . . Damn manual mode is fun!! He definitely didn't even know it existed . . .

Lastly, he put a dealership sticker on my car the bastard. When I said something about it (even though I'll be removing it myself), he said "Oh, well you can change the license plate frames". No shit Sherlock.

What are your stories with Salesman that knew nothing about your car?

During the car orientation after closing the sale, he was flipping thru the manual not saying anything but rather pretending that he is actually explaining something. It was actually his first sale so I didn't take it too hard on him.

That sounds awesome.

Both salesman that sold me my MK6s were fairly knowledgable about the cars. I even test drove the GTI without the salesman since we had to go to the overflow lot to go get it.

I ran into a VW new car salesman who did not know how to open the hatch. Spent several minutes looking for a release in the cabin, glove box, on the remote, etc.

Alot of these guys are hired because they can persuade the buyer to purchase useless warranties, protection packages and other worthless crap. Hardly any of 'em are technical these days nor do they care about vehicles - finding a salesperson who genuinely likes automobiles is quite rare.

Technically the unlock button is "keyless entry" as you're not putting a key in the door.

As for the shifting, I'm not sure if the labels changed between '12 and '14, but it's pretty obvious that "+ -" are to the right of the "D". Common sense tells me that's up/down shifting while "S" is sport.

Of course this doesn't excuse his lack of knowledge on the topic. When I got my recent car the salesman was an older guy (65+) and he didn't know how to do shit on the sync system, let alone didn't know where the hazards button was.

My salesman that I bought my GTI from was great though.

The sales guy I signed papers with at the VW dealer, has a MK6 GTI that broke 11's during the fall. His post is on VWVortex, with youtube vid of the run. I remember going back to buy my wife's GLI and he was happy about his new run and the MPGs he got getting to the track lol.

In regards to the DSG, not only is this my first GTI or dual clutch vehicle, but it is my first automatic in 7 years. I think my problem was that I assumed "S" was the manual mode, nobody told me otherwise, and I didn't even consider the fact that the shifter could move to the right.... So that's my fault, but if he knew, that would have been helpful lol

I went in there after e-mailing them stating "This exact car on your site is the one I want, I'd like to come in and buy it". So there was no "selling me" on the car. I knew what it was, and I wanted it in my driveway, yet, when we first walked out to it, he said the greatest line ever with a massive grin on his face:

"This isn't just any Volkswagen Golf, this is the 2014 GTI Drivers Edition!"

No kidding, why do you think I'm here?

Overall though, he really was a great guy. He worked to get me a lower interest rate than I had on the loan I went there with, just so I could afford it at the price they wanted. Didn't matter to me at all because in the end, I'll be paying the same amount out of pocket each month!

The Fixer
I haven't met a salesperson yet that can answer any of my questions. But I have met a couple with good service, that goes a long way.

Was test driving a .:R, asked about the AWD system, he stated that it was FWD, after that, I stopped asking him questions and defiantly didn't buy a car from him.

I'd say 90% of the salespersons I've run into don't know jackshit about the cars they're selling. Once I correct them on obvious stuff....engine size, horsepower...etc.......they usually just shut up ...thank God..... until it's time to haggle. :w00t:

when i went to subaru to test the wrx sti, the salesman asked me what the boost gauge and si-drive were.

VW wise, my salesman basically memorized the audio system and spent the entire time explaining bluetooth and pairing during delivery. All i was thinking was when he was gonna leave so I could drive lol
