Water, now, in Trunk/boot area. How???

After 3+ years of practically no problems apart from creaking doors and ticking external trim, I now find that I am getting water into my Trunk/boot area. First discovered this on taking out some stuff from the Trunk prior to taking my car into the VW dealer's bodyshop to get my plastic bumper apron undented and resprayed after being attacked by a BMW in Sainsburys' car park three weeks ago.
I removed my 'stuff' and found that in the right hand corner, where the spare oil storage slot is, the carpet was wet and the ledge that support this part of the carpet was wet also. Of course there was some water in and around the spare wheel and this was mopped up and everything eventually dried out by bringing it indoors.
I picked up the car last Friday from the bodyshop where they'd obviously washed the car down and when I got home found quite a lot of water again in the spare wheel hold and in the same area of the boot carpet ledge close to the spare oil holder. It was then dried and the car has been standing out on my drive and exposed to last night's sleet and snow and the car had not been driven for four days. This morning, the same area was wet again with a small amount of water in the wheel well.
I will have to go back to the VW dealership and ask whether this has been a commonly reported problem.
Does anyone here have any similar problems with leaks here and what has caused them?

I had a somewhat similar issue where water was filling up around my spare wheel. Dealer said it was due to a loose "rodent" fence :iono: that resides in the rear bumper.

There are 2 vents behind the bumper on each side and the gasket/seal is damage and water is entering from there.Get new vents or replace the seal.Bumper needs to be remove to replace.

I'm lost, I am afraid. What are these vents for and where do they go from the outside. Sorry if I am ignorant.

Look at post # 7 and it will show you the vents. This is from a MK5 vehical but should be the same for MK6.

If you remove the rear bumper you should see a plastic housing on the passenger side and driver side. There is a flap inside that housing that will occasionally get stuck open or the gasket around the vent flap is damage causing water to enter.

Also check your outer taillight gaskets if the vents are ok.

I have washed car yesterday thoroughly using a hose-fed brush all over including the hatchback area and then leathered it off and there was not a drop of water to be seen in the trunk/boot area. It then rained overnight with strong winds and rain and again no water in spare wheel well.
The road dried out to just barely damp and with just a bit of spray up on the windscreen and yet when I got home from a ten mile drive there was now some evidence of water in the wheel well and on th ledge supportinge the trunk/boot's carpet. Seems to being drawn in from somewhere when car in motion but not when stationary.

If you are only seeing water when driving the car. It is 99% likely it is the air vents in the back then.

Had this happen on other cars, buy new vents, place them. Just make sure you get the gasket in there well and you will stay dry.

Am going to arrange with the dealer that repaired and resprayed the bumper/fender apron, to remove it and then examine for the offside (driver's side) boot vent, rear lamp cluster seal and any dodgy seams in the boot well area. God knows what this will cost me but I can't abide having a car that leaks water into the boot/trunk.
I wonder how long it takes to remove that apron. Labour charges here, are at least £90/hour, I would think.

Check the price of the vents and the gaskets from a dealer. No clue what they are. It's not a hard job to do yourself.

You should be able to do it all from inside the hatch, and not have to remove anything from exterior ff the car. this is assuming you let the old vents just fall and sneak them out of the panels where you can. That's how I did the vents on the last car I remember doing them on, and it worked, they never leaked again.

Unfortunately, it isn't the vents from my experience. I went in to the dealership, they washed my car, then my incident occurred. My windows started fogging when it was dry outside, and I needed to drive with AC on. On changing my winter tires noticed the spare tire area was filled with water.

Brought it back to the dealership and they traced it down to a tiny hole near the top of the rear hatch. They said the weld for what ever reason did not finish. They welded it, smoothed out and repainted. It hasn't happened since.

Hope yours are just the vents.

On a semi-related note: where does the water go that gets in your sunroof (when your leave it tilted up one click and it rains in there)?? Maybe that's the water that 'pushes' to the back of the car when you're driving?

I've accidentally left mine cracked one click at work and rain will puddle up on that plastic lip (never gets inside though), but I always leave the roof open in my garage that night if rain gets in there....hopefully it evaporates OR goes out the back through these vents you guys mentioned.

Same problem

Hi Marvin,
I have the exact same problem you described, in my mk5 Golf estate. Can you tell me if you managed to locate the source of the water getting in?
I am suspecting the panoramic sunroof, but am unsure.
I would be very grateful if you can help.

Hello Russ. That experience certainly left me depressed and worried about the time of Dec/Jan 2012/2013 after someone had gone into my O/S rear bumper apron.
Anyway on a cold January's day, I got out a hose and worked from the bottom of the car upwards all around the right hand side of the rear hatch door. Eventually, in my case and unequivocally, I found the water coming in around the pressure equalisation flapper vent that is low down behing the boot trim on the right hand side of the boot. If you pull away this trim below the boot light you'll see the vent with its horizontal slats and rubber grommeted surround. Water was appearing all around there and then travelling across the metal surface into the wheel well.
The water from the hose when poured over the rear light cluster was finding its way down behind the plastic bumper apron and below which is the outside of that vent.
I don't know whether the prang caused it or when fitting the new apron the garage dislodged/damaged it. Anyway I presented these facts back to the paint workshop after they'd repaired the damage and they must have sem-removed the new bumper apron again and reseated/sealed the vent's suround and everything was OK from that moment onwards.

Here is a picture of similar vent from a MK4 Golf.
