What is Subaru doing?

Preface: I know. Manual only for these kinds of cars, yada, yada, yada (we get it Jay).

I've always enjoyed the exhaust note of the boxer, so the STI has always been in my consideration list whenever shopping, but why a CVT over a dual clutch like the DSG?

It does have something called the "Subaru Performance Transmission," a marketing jargon that tries to make CVTs more exciting.

People who aren't journalists who have actually driven the WRX's newest CVT say it's very good. They probably chose this over dual clutch technology because it's pretty much tuning the hardware that they already use.

Subaru and Toyota don't have a dual clutch transmission to begin with. Plus the Subaru CVT is actually very good and better than any regular automatic transmissions that they had in the past. However, not having a manual in their S210 prototype is definitely a weird decision to make, considering they already have 6 speed manuals in production.

Yeah, I saw in another article that you can't compare the STI CVT to their other ones. It's somehow different, but apparently pretty good.

At least cvt doesn't have those horrible sounding farts
I saw a very weird Reddit thread talking about CVT shift points and was thoroughly confused. Only CVT I've ever driven was on a rental Jeep Patriot that was super rubber bandy.

People (me) who aren't journalists and have driven both know that the CVT is trash. The "SPT" is just a TR690 with an oil cooler and some nicer programming. S# mode is slightly more aggressive, but it still feels like a rubber band compared to a ZF8 or especially a DCT/DSG.

The only reason they used this is because it's the cheapest option, otherwise they'd probably have gone with the Aisin 8-speed that the longitudinal Toyotas use.

Come on, that isn't fair. You can't compare any automatic transmission to the ZF 8HP. Even the ZF 9HP sucks compared to the ZF 8HP lol. It sucked in my 2015 Acura TLX and apparently it still sucks today. Though it shifted a lot smoother in the Chrysler Pacifica I rented in Vegas in October 2023.

The CVT goes perfectly with the plastic cladding. Garbage transmission, garbage exterior now goes along with that garbage ass motor.
The FA24 in the VB WRX is actually really good. Huge improvement compared to the EJ20 and EJ25, but man, those EJs are legendary. Of course, it doesn't compare to the EA888 EVO 4 and probably Gen 3 that VAG uses. Though don't forget, the EA888 was designed by Audi and then improved over multiple generations and are now used basically throughout the VAG group.
