Where to move?

My wife and I are considering moving.

We live in the Chicago suburbs and fuckin HATE this state, its corrupt, over taxed (we pay 10% tax even on food and groceries), very anti gun, we leave the state regularly for skiing and mountain biking, cost of living is high, this whole state and especially Crook County (cook county = Chicago and the suburbs) can lick my chilli ring.

Come winter/ next spring we are talking about gtfo out of this place and the search for where to go has begun.

Things we are looking for...
- VW dealerships in the area, the more the better
- snow skiing within day trip distance
- single track mountain biking near by
- gun friendly
- bike friendly (as in road bicycles)
- a biggish city near by, Chicago can suck it but I love being a stone throw away from lots and lots of events

Our current train of thought is Madison Wisconsin or Chattanogga Tennessee.

Any input?

Northwest of Philly like Lansdale, Doylestown, North Wales, Perkasie, even Allentown. The only thing I'm not sure on is the gun laws but I have several friends who own assault rifles so it can't be too bad. Trip up to the poconos for skiing or MTB, into Philly for fun city stuff and certainly a lot of us mk6 members. I road bike frequently and there are a ton of dedicated paved trails around. Also 90-120min from beaches too if you're into that.

Edit, to more address your interests

Many VW dealers in the area. VW Willow Grove, Thomson, North Penn, Wynn, Langhorne, many to choose from. I know Bender is around those parts and has a dealer who has treated him very well, so that'd be a good place to start if you're seriously considering it. Sales tax is 6%, unless you live in Philadelphia, the income tax per municipality is almost negligible. Cost of living is fairly high but that also depends where you settle around here. I'm in the "rich zone" (known around here as "the main line") with a lot of huge mansions and stuff so food and gas are ridiculous and there are a lot of self-righteous SUV drivers, etc. I'm not north though, I'm West of Philly. Politics are politics, generally not too corrupt but...its politics so its only going to be so good.

The suburbs of Denver check all your boxes except the guns.. they aren't super against them but it could be better.

Move to New Hampshire. That's where i'm aiming to go when I graduate. They're state motto is "live free or die". How bad ass is that? haha
Pros: No income tax, no sales tax, they sell fireworks (which are always fun to play with), gun friendly, tons of ski areas and not far from the good ones either and lots of out door activities. Boston isn't too far of a drive away and has all the city you need
Cons: HIGH property tax. As you go further into NH you sorta hit the boonies. School systems are getting corrupted with drugs etc. That's all I was able to pull up from my own research

Question, how do you just consider up and moving in this economy? What kind of jobs do you and your wife have? Only reason I ask is I would love to up and move to somewhere I actually want to be.. but jobs force us to stay near Boston.

our property taxes are insane here.. i live in a suburb called mount prospect, my family owns a 2500 sq. ft. house, and the proprty tax is just under $10k a year! (he pays $9800)

my dad has actually been talking about moving these past few months. not out of the state, but atleast in a different town where the property taxes don't rob you every year.

I'm working my way towards this option at my job. Up to working from home 3 days a week. If I can get that to be full-time, would be free to move anywhere in the country while still keeping the same job.

Personally, I want to get out to the pacific northwest. Vancouver, WA area. Where there's no income tax, and also no sales tax right across the border in Portland, OR. But then I like that 50-70 degree weather and don't mind rain.

Nashville fills all of those needs for you, not to mention relatively cheap real estate in the area. I plan on moving there right out of college in about a year. My father is a real estate developer and has done years of research on the area, and it is just a perfect place to live, on paper at least. The summers might be brutal compared to our fair weather, but I think it would fulfill all/most of your needs

Seattle is where it's at. Expensive? Kinda. Worth it? Yep.

Nashville's becoming the new Florida. Considered one of the best places to retire, heh.

According to CNN, Austin is considered one of the best places to retire as well lol. It's not always a bad thing, who wants to retire in a crappy place? Senior citizens may be onto something with Nashville
