Howdy folks!
I just got a pretty good deal on a 2012 GTI from a neighbor. I am very happy with the car so far, but... It's got stock 18" rims that are pretty scratched up from the previous owner(s) encounters with curbs on both sides of the vehicle. Also the ride is pretty noisy, the tires are shot, and I am planning a long trip.
So, I have been entertaining the notion of fitting it with a set of affordable 16" steel rims, so that I can get a new set of tires that are quieter, more comfortable, less easily scratched, and less prone to blowing out on potholes.
My questions are:
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My questions are:
- Exactly what size wheels do I need? It's got the standard brakes, so I am assuming all I need to know is:
- 16" width
- 5x112 bolt pattern
- ...but, what width? I am seeing everything from 6" through 10" out there... Does it matter?
- What tires would fit on 16" rims? I am assuming
- 205 / 55 R16
- 205 / 55 R16
- Are there any safety concerns with putting 16" rims on this car?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
