How ugly were your intake valves

Bought a 2012 with 90k miles recently and am fixing it up as a daily. I know these DI engines need love but wow!? Two before shots and one after. Shop in Fort Worth did the work.

Gnarly. It wasn't running rough at start or anything?

It ran ok, not sewing machine smooth, that is what I expect will happen based on my experience with other DI cars. They havenít got it running yet because now they are doing the timing chain tensioner, water pump, stage 3 clutch disk, IC, and downpipe. Eventually, after my budget recovers, it will get a K04.

Carbon build up on the TSI engines can get pretty bad. I've seen some really gnarly pics of valves even at lower mileage. You're putting some nice upgrades on your car, it should make a great daily!

For anyone interested in doing the carbon cleaning yourself or seeing what is involved, check out forum user Neopork's great post and PDF document.

Mine looked the same after 50k. No driveability issues though. I cleaned mine by hand with solvents

Just had my second IM replaced under warranty.

Valves at 83k (cleaned that myself)

Valves at 114.5k (dealer cleaned after the second IM replacement)
