ASTRID - SCCA TT National Tour & Time Attack Build

Autocross #2 on the books, coming in 2nd again out of 14 cars, this time only .0029 behind a 370z nismo. This track was difficult as lots of very slow tight turns did not play well with the slower spooling KO4, forcing me to constantly shift between 1st and 2nd. My car was also "hopping" due to the softly sprung MSS springs.

https://youtu.be/eoDrERlpXxYhttps://youtu.be/eoDrERlpXxY

Recently uncovered a few oil leaks that I believe the extra power/stress of the KO4 is exacerbating that I am going to have taken care of. I believe the timing covers are leaking, and my cam cover is weeping as well. I also found a fresh oil leak coming from the turbo which is a little unsettling.

My rear seat delete finally came in the mail, and I am expecting my OPS to come in tomorrow. I picked up a new APR Intake and will be selling my IE intake since the APR OPS is only compatible with an intake that mounts to the grill (i.e. VWR/APR).

I am considering removing my wortec oil pan now that I have the OPS...though the extra oil capacity does help with temps, I am concerned about ground clearance since the pan does sit a good 5mm lower which didn't seem much on paper until I saw the car on the ground.

I also received my 3rd iteration from Stratified today. Hopefully this will resolve some of the lower RPM funkiness that I have been experiencing. Still idles like ass when it's cold, but Alex has assured me he's going to try his best to fix it.

Would’ve traded my carbonio for your IE intake. How much do you want for it? Lol

Awesome build man! I love the 2 door and the fact you take to the track. Keep up the good work.

Thank you!

PM'd :)

Car is running much better on the 3rd iteration of the tune. Already reclogged and sent back to Alex for the 4th. Hoping he can smooth out my cold start idle.

I received my APR OPS yesterday and unfortunately the pressure gauge was destroyed during shipping. So I took a quick drive down to Canton Racing products in Branford CT who originally provided the hardware for the kit to APR and they're going to repair it for me in addition to disassembling the accumulator and the schraeder valve to clean and inspect everything before I install it. The guys there were super helpful and happy to help.

lava rock hood thermal cover thing. PTP i think is the company name. I have my doubts about it really being worth it but it is a nice pretty piece. They make turbo blankets also.

What is that?

Yeah it's honestly more aesthetically pleasing than it is functional. But it will certainly protect the finish on the hood from the excess heat at the track.

I have their turbo blanket waiting to go on. I haven't tried but I heard it's a pain when the turbo is still on the car. We'll see.

Yeah it's a PITA. You kinda have to put it on while on the car.

Also remember not to touch the blanket with your bare hands. Oils on your skin isn't good for it.

Put my firewall blanket on today and also tried installing my new APR intake and I think something isn't right with the way the turbo was installed. The coupler for the intake point's towards the firewall which makes fitting the stage 2 pipe impossible. I also believe it's why the intake pipe for my IE intake got all messed up.

How it sits flush with the turbo:

How it SHOULD sit (with the back of the coupler barely on the lip of the turbo):

So I'll have to call the shop on Tuesday and get some questions answered. But the firewall blanket looks great!

I also got some new racing numbers today. Pretty pumped!

Annnd finally, I got a CG Lock off ebay. It locks the lap belt in place which helps keep your ass planted in the seat. Excited to put it to good use at tomorrows event.

You won your class at the last autocross event! They are holding on to your glass at the trailer till the next event.

Sad to say that I don't think I'll be autocrossing the gti anymore. She'll stay my daily driver though and I'll continue to slowly mod it. Maybe i'll even throw it on the track some day.

But for now I want to focus on making the mustang more daily drivable and to get it on the track this year. I'm hoping to get it on Thompson towards the end of this season.

I ordered a new drivers seat along with a new 4-point harness for the Cobra though! Think after that I'll order some fresh rotors since mine now have some small cracks in it and bleed the brakes with some new high temp brake fluid.

Awesome dude. I had a blast riding along, that car is gonna make an awesome track beater!

Speaking of beaters....

I bought a non-running 1998 ford escort zx2 for $400 on the side of the road right up the street from my house. All it ended up needing was a valve cover gasket and some fresh spark plugs (the bad gasket was leaking oil on top of the plugs preventing a spark).

In the process of doing a quick tune up on it and some new tires and struts (which for this car is hilariously cheap).

But that means the VW is no longer on daily driver duty. I am in the process of saving up for a big brake kit, some proper coilovers and camber plates. Might not happen until Winter--ideally would like to get the car paid off first.

I did get my APR accumulator back from Canton last week freshly rebuilt. Going to get fresh lines from Jegs before I put it back on the car.

I also had Excelerate rotate the cold side of the turbo (thankfully they were able to do it with the turbo on the car) so that I should be able to properly mount my new APR intake which will allow the fitment of the accumulator.

A new daily beater, awesome! Sounds like you got a great deal on it at $400... and it only needing a new valve cover gasket + plugs. I'd drive the wheels off that escort.

This Gti is going to be a track monster soon! Big brake kit would be a great upgrade; what kit are you looking to get? Could probably pick up a lightly used Stoptech kit for pretty cheap on this site.

I love the look of the APR intake... although I do wish it made more intake sounds but that's alright. That APR accumulator should give you piece of mind with oil starvation. Did you take the larger oil pan off yet or are you leaving it on?

This weekend should be perfect weather for autox too. Sooo glad its not going to rain lol. The Cobra was fun last time... but not fast at all hahaha, surprised how easy it was to kick the rear end out.

Anyways, i'll see ya at autox on Sunday and we shall battle it out.
