New RCD330 Plus Headunit with Mirrorlink/Carplay

Did you ever end up figuring this out? I see that you posted your unit for sale in the classifieds...so not super optimistic.

Nope, sadly never got it to work and sold the RCD330. I still think I'd take an RCD330 over my RNS315 though, despite the quirks. I ended up going to THIS 9" Android 8.0 headunit instead, which has it's own different set of quirks. There's no good 100% issue free option for a DynAudio equipped headunit upgrade from the RNS315, aside from the $1550 MIB2 PQ conversion. My R is a garage queen and not a daily driver, so I can tolerate a few quirks that if I had to deal with daily would probably bother me more. So for now the android headunit will work, but once I can blow the cash on the MIB2 I think that's the way I'll go.

Just installed my rcd330 unit and everything works fine right off the bat except for one thing. When i turn off the car, the headunit still stays on while playing the radio. So i have to manually turn off the radio every single time. I also have to manually turn on the radio everytime i get into my car and start it. Does anyone else experience this? Is there a solution to this? Thanks bros

Hey community, I installed my noname 187b unit and everything works great except when I get notifications the volume is way too loud. I've heard this is an issue for other Carplay units, but is there any fix to this problem?

I have a 2011 Autobahn GTI with the Dynaudio package. Will this work in my car? Is MDI still functional? Will the steering wheel controls work for skipping songs and volume?

I really want to get a different setup as the stock bluetooth connection is less than ideal, but I keep reading conflicting reports about this setup. Thanks in advance.

I have a 2012 Autobahn with Nav/Dynaudio and tried the RCD330. I was back to my car's original headunit in a week. Just way to non-OEM feeling and functioning for me. You might be ok with it though. Good news is that they're easy to install/uninstall and cheap to buy/resell easily. I see it more as an upgrade for lower end headunit users.

Here's an update on my recent install as promised. I have successfully soldered in a rear USB output, and AUX out. I have routed the USB to an iPhone dock in the armrest.

My requirements for the dock were:

Must be able to operate single handed (slide in style)
Be flexible to fit different size phones, and cases
Be flat backed so it could be stuck to the side of the space inside the armrest.

Here's some pics:

1. Solder in USB and AUX cables

6. Cut hole in the bottom of the armrest box for cable

Bit late on this but I can't find a usb cable that's able to work with android auto over this distance? When I extend it the 1.5m I need to get it to the arm rest I can only charge, AA starts but stops soon after or just freezes on trying...

Anyone got a cable that worked?

Edit to answer my question:

Okay got it working!

Firstly, the cheap mk6 clone connector I got from aliexpress was junk, getting a proper VW connector fixed the issue.

I used:
https://amzn.to/2Mcw6tl - mk6 button for dash and cable (I got rid of the button)
https://amzn.to/2KM1Wri - the twin usb and aux, the usb connector inside is crap, swap it for the one from the button.
https://amzn.to/2KMj7J6 and https://amzn.to/2KNiejx connectors for easy 3.5mm jack connector - could have used the vw connector but couldn't find a female connector for the white one on the aux so this sufficed. (red is right, white is left, black is ground)
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/253804385474 - stripped the connector off and soldered the cable to the motherboard.

Few notes:
1) front aux and usb work though usb is power only, no data works there it just throws an error.
2) rear works fine, but you must keep the cable as short as possible.
3) the cable you connect to the usb socket in the car is super important too, needs to be short and shielded, for me I used https://amzn.to/2nwjLkY for my usb-c phone, simply because it was short, well screened and right angle.
4) connection can disconnect randomly but no worse than hanging a cable off the front like before...

Just fitted an RCD330 to our Golf, yes its not picking up any AM radio, but really does that matter these days? The FM stations are transmitting track information, which is an improvement over the RCD510 and we now have a clock as well, throw in the bluetooth connectivity and I really can't complain for the money.

The only issue I had was actually getting hold of the head unit itself, I had 2 failed ebay attempts, where both sellers were deregistered by Ebay, so I had to request cancellation and refunds, but the aliexpress transaction went smoothly.

I have a 2012 Autobahn with Dyn and have a rcd330 which has been fantastic. Can't understand what your issue was with it. Can you provide some details, because to me it was a great upgrade over the rns-315

Okay, so my wife now reports that the radio cuts in and out, and reception is generally rubbish, is this common, and can it be fixed?

I’m using a rcd330 with iPhone and have dynaudio. It works well. Plug and play. Didn’t have to do the battery reconnection or anything

Do you have any distortion when increasing the volume past a certain point ? And how's the sound quality compared to your previous head unit ?

No distortion at all. I remember thinking it sounded cleaner when I first installed it. Maybe that was placebo affect. I might have read that it has higher voltage pre outs.not sure

Would you be able to link me where you got yours from ? Just want to see if it's the same as the one I got.
