Front Strut removal

Hi All,
Just wondering if it is really necessary to remove the axle and hub to change the strut?

I'm replacing the stock struts with Koni yellows and all the DIY's indicate that you need to remove the axle and hub.

some say you can do it w/ out removing it, i find easier to just remove the axle bolt, but supposedly it can be done

I changed out my springs and for about 2 hours I tried doing it without removing the axles.
I removed the axle and in 5 mins i was good to go.

I had to pull the axel out but only on the left side when i was installing my koni's

I didn't pull the axles or hub off when I swapped strut and springs..

I see by your info that you have a TDI, it has the same suspension as my Sportline. So if you changed struts and springs without removing axles and hubs then I should be able to as well.
