bumping this old thread - did this job last night, it works.
Raised the front end of the car and undid the sway bar endlinks. Then used a 7/8 sparkplug socket (from aircraft spruce) in combination with the hex to remove the strut nut. The shock assembly dropped as predicted and I had enough clearance (with little force pushing down on the brake) to replace the bearings. Then used a floor jack to carefully bring the assembly back up and reinstall the top nut. I'm not sure you can get the arm low enough to replace the dust boot, but my issue lies with the bearing/mount for sure.
The bearings I took out were SO loose and had grease coming out the sides. Needless to say, the noise isn't completely gone - but much better. I've noticed that the bearings aren't as 'snug' in the 034Motorsport mount as they are in the OEM mount. I can put them in the oem mount and hold it upside down without the bearing falling - not the case with the 034 mounts... Anyways, I may try getting a fresh set of oem mounts and try again later since this was a pretty easy process.
tl;dr - You don't need to remove your strut assembly to replace the bearings/mounts!
I'm running Koni str.t orange shocks with H&R supersport springs. Not sure if this works with other set ups?
