Could someone explain to me briefly how the highbeams work on the golf r ,

do the xenons have a highbeam or does it come from a different light source

All xenon units on the Golf/GTI work the same. There is shutter on the low beam that flips up when the high beams are "turned" on.

so if my highbeam is not working does that mean that there is a problem with xenon unit

If your highbeam is not working, there is a problem with your lights shutter. I'd take it in for service. It may be stuck, wiring/electrical issue etc.
