Most comfortable shocks ?

Did you run the short bumpstops Eibach supplied for the rear struts? I have a set of Pro-Kits I’ll be installing this week over my Konis and I’ve debated between the supplied rear bumpstops or going with the 118 mm length VW “sport spring” stops that look like they have a similar rate progression curve as the stock bumpstops.

I’ll probably end up trying both, they’re easy enough to change.

I used the oem bump stops because they had the dust shield on them. I remember when I installed them comparing to the oem and them being the same length.

Stock. Most comfortable performance springs are gonna be DG.

So pretty much the milder the drop, the milder the ride.

Any consensus on progressive springs? I'd be willing to give up some handling for comfort and/or looks. Eibach Pro-Kits are one of the softest progressive springs, no?

They must have updated the kit, because mine came with new dust shields for the rear that fit the supplied bump stops. The ride should be smoother with the bumpstops Eibach supplied because there's roughly 3/4" more free space when the stops engage versus the "118 mm VW sport" bump stops, but I liked how the rear spring rate ramped up with the stock bump stops as the car settled into a corner.

I know we typically regard the Pro-Kits as "progressive", but looking at them (sitting on my garage floor) they look more like they're dual rate rather than progressive rate. I know I'm playing a bit with semantics on this, but I'm pretty sure the lower rate is simply to keep the spring seated on a stock length strut (like a helper spring on a coilover) with the higher rate more or less being the actual rate you experience while driving.

Of course, I can't possibly know one way or the other because Eibach never released the rates. I'm just making an educated guess.

The Pro-Kit's actual rate is probably not so high that it would significantly impact ride quality. I'll take some measurements when I get the front springs mounted on the shocks, but with the shorter bump stops they supply it looks like there's still plenty of travel to soak up bumps before you hit the bump stops. This means the quality of the ride is going to be almost entirely dictated by the dampers, so it may very well be as smooth as stock.

okay here's an idea.

seems koni yellows/sports are the most comfortable shock/strut/damper for this platform.

soooo next time i buy shocks, i'll buy yellows/sports.

- to the idea.

Many people would put DG manual 4door springs on there DSG 4door.
This helped lower the front more.

Now what if people with DSG and 4door used manual 2door OEM Springs.
Would this not help the wheel gap issue a fair bit, well keeping stock ride comfort?

I think i'm gonna try something like this ....

I have been running Bilstein B8's with DG Springs for 8 months or so now. Car feels more planted than stock, but has zero harshness with day to day driving. I love it.
Just throwing my .02 into the mix.

Where'd you buy them?

I know Bilstein makes good shocks, but with all the complaints on the MkV forums from years ago complaining about them being excessively harsh I always hesitate a bit to recommend them.

True, but the Bilsteins for the MK6 are different & (supposedly) softer/more street friendly

Was at a VW/Audi specialist the other day installing the Tyrolsport Subframe Kits. I was telling him how I’m getting the itch to do some upgrades, even though the car is a 2011 and has 61k miles. It has an APR Flash for 5 years now, but other than that I haven’t done anything. He told me that it’s probably better to sell the car and buy something newer, since all the headaches will start now. Not ready to buy something, as the cars I like aren’t in my price range right now, and after installing new tires, a new fuel injector, new spark plugs, new front and rear brakes and rotors, and the Tyrolsport Subframe kit, I feel like I’m in pretty good shape for the car to last. Also he was mostly saying it about adding power to the car at this point, but that’s not something I’m looking to do. The ECU upgrade I have is plenty, and at the most it would just be to add an intake maybe.

Anyway, wanted to see your opinion on this.

As for the mods, I wanted to get the VMR V710s 18 x 8.5 on Conti DWS 06 225x 40 R18s. Handling, and having that feeling of control and comfort at all speeds is important to me, so I wanted to see if DGs with Koni Yellows are the best combo for performance and comfort, and better than stock. Lastly, do you think a sway bar is needed? If so, I was thinking of grant and rear from eibach.

Thanks for the feedback!!!

Hey,

I think as you may have read earlier in this thread, it seems folks who have run the DG and koni Setups had the most luck for most comfortable lowered ride.

Bilstein is hit and miss and likely more stiff than the adjustable koni's.
Although some people have reported comfortable rides with the Mk6 version of the B8's, most people haven't had the best luck with Bilstein.

DG springs are linear so designed like the OEM springs. Much better than H&R or any progressive springs that are badly designed.

Sway bars are great .... but they can cause side to side jolting, speaking from experience, when going over uneven roads and dips, etc.

someone went K04 on here at 280000 miles .... don't think engines are an issue if treated right. they do have problems but that doesn't tend to be mileage related.

Others should be able to chip in.

Cheers.

Hey .... for those with DSG and 4 door mk6 GTI's .... do any of you have your OE front springs lying around that you could post a picture of, that shows the paint codes??

I cant get part numbers unless i have paint codes.

Thanks.

Thanks OEMPL+S. May try DGs and Koni Yellows first, before doing the sways.

Heading to the shop tomorrow because after the Tyrolsport Subframe install, I’ve had a lot of constant crackling sounds when turning the steering wheel.
