Turbo failed at 48,000kms!!!!! Is APR tune the culprit?

So, past few months has been a pain and expensive for me – My Mk6 Golf R 2010 (APR stage 2+ ready but running on stage 1+ atm) has a blown turbo!!!!!!:mad0259:

I got it checked and turns out its leaking oil through the seals on the exhaust side (usually smoke on hill stop or after idling for a min or so.
I sent it to get checked by a turbo specialist here’s his response:

“Looking at this situation and looking at the original turbocharger that came of the car to me you may well be getting yourself into hot water.
The Original turbocharger to us looks to have failed due to over boost.”

Apparently, he won’t suggest rebuilding it as it will be expensive, suggested to buy a brand new one.

It sucks the car has only done 48,000kms the whole white smoke thing started happening at 45,000kms !!

I rang the local APR dealer he just couldn’t believe that the turbo has failed at this low Kms…. He was like there are 100’s of Golf R running more power on the stock turbo and has travelled 100,000+ kms with no issue.
He told me the turbo is strong enough to handle 25psi (my current boost) also I was the first case with this kinda problem

I am confused now…. Turbo guy is blaming the high boost tune also said if I install the stock turbo I will end up on the same situation again and APR dealer is saying that’s strange, probably it’s just a badly assembled turbo (bad luck).:23:

Today the stock Brog W. K04 is getting installed on my car, I thought of going with Franken F23T but ECS Tuning are out of stock  (honestly shit luck and timing).

Is it the APR tune stressing the turbo? Any way I could control or limit the boost (under 25psi)?

I bought this car at 41000kms – looks wise it’s in MINT condition, regularly serviced by VW every 12 months (too long for me) since I bought the car I changed the oil every 5000 kms. The pervious owner used this as a weekend/meet car.

Here’s a list of mods I’ve got installed:

• APR Stage 2+ ready
• APR Front Mount Intercooler System
• APR High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP)
• APR Intake Manifold Runner Flap Delete (RFD)
• VWR Transverse Cold Air Intake System
• IPe full exhaust
• Forge motorsport Blow Off Adaptor
• Spulen catch can with PCV valve delete
• APR tune
• Ultra-Racing under body bracing
• UNIbrace XB brace

• Carbon fibre spoiler, side skirts and rear diffuser
• Flow design front bumper lip
• Carbon headlight eyelids
• Blacked out VW logos
• Recaro racing seats (leather/alcantara)
• H&R lowering springs
• Work VSxx Wheels
• Work emotions lug nuts
• Pirelli P zero tyres
• Forge motorsports

Any thoughts on what I should do? Or any recommended tune I should go with? I just want my car to be realible now...

Thank you

I think I recall that some early tunes may have had overboat issues that APR since corrected in revisions. But I think those would go into limp mode before anything bad happened. What version tune do you have?

My belief is that it isn't the tune that caused it. I've been APR 2+ since 33,000 miles and I'm now at 112,000 miles. Prior to going to 2+ I was 1+ from about 18,000 miles and stage 1 from 3,000 miles. So my R has been tuned for basically its whole life.

things just happen, and it happened to you which is unfortunate. turbos fail even on stock cars.

positive note, upgrade

I'd say if you want more power now is the perfect time to upgrade, otherwise I would probably just replace the turbo and move on.

My 2013 gti turbo was replaced at 40,000 miles and was stage 2 for nearly half those miles

Wow 48k in 7 years? That's not healthy for your engine and electronics. It can be the culprit.

So, I got a brand-new stock turbo installed - paid $4100 :(
Anyway, when I was driving back home I started noticing whining sound when turbo was spooling. I took the car back to the workshop and the mechanic said that’s normal.

I carried on with it... I clocked around 500kms after installation and then I started noticing a clicking like sound and car started smoking white smoke at start-ups!!!!
I am 100% sure the turbo is fucked AGAIN!!!
Before installing the turbo, the technician checked everything to make sure no metal is floating around in oil or air intake.
The car is booked in for a check-up tomorrow, hopefully its covered under warranty........
I was told if the turbo fails due to boosting it won’t be covered under warranty, tbh I haven’t floored or went up 20+ psi after I got new turbo I was taking it easy for 1st 1000kms. I have no clue what the hell is going on.
Fuck my life:(

Have you checked turbo lub feed and drain? Too low or too high oil pressure would kill a journal bearing turbo.

Clogged feed-->low oil pressure, premature bearing wear
Clogged drain-->high oil pressure, leaking seal

Yes that’s "KIWI" dollars :p

So, I took the car at the mechanic today and showed him the oil smoke which comes out when the can is on an angle (on a hilly slope).
He told me if the turbo oil seals are gone AGAIN it won’t be covered in warranty as it has APR tune on it.
He reckons that if that’s the case, the main cause is the tune as the new turbo should have been on the stock tune for its break in.
Funny they didn't tell me all the break in shit last time I went to pick up the car.
They are going to remove the downpipe to see if the turbo is culprit (he found it weird how it smoked only when the car is on angel.
I love my Golf very much but my pocket hates it. It has created a fear in me about EURO/modified cars now.

Something sounds fishy

Ok so turn the clicking noise was the fuel line touching the body on lower rpms.
Why did the new turbo smoke?
- The technician removed my Spluen catch can/PCV delete and installed the new revision of VW PCV value.
And guess what the car stopped smoking!!!!
So I asked the tech. does this mean that there was nothing wrong with my pervious turbo and he said possibly…maybe? omg!!!!!

I thought the whole point of installing catch can/PCV block off palate was to eliminate this risk.

This has been a confusing case.
