Sloppy gear stick

Hi,

First post so I hope I am in the right place. I have a 2011 2.0 TDI 6 speed and when in gear there is a quite a lot of play if you move the gearstick left or right. I assume I need a new linkage but here lies the problem - I am unable to identify which parts I need to fix it.

Can I replace the ends or is it just easier swapping the whole linkage, gearstick included?

I would start by inspecting the easy to get to components. Pull out your intake box and piping that runs between the engine and battery and you should be able to see it all. From there if you tug on the cable ends and detect any play you may have found the problem. Also have a good look at the cable bracket that feeds the cables to the shift assembly that's mounted to the transmission, that can be a source of excessive side to side slop.

How bad is the play? Is it way worse than stock, or are you just looking to improve it?
