Did you bring the car in or just dropped it after the phone call? I would bring it in regardless so this issue is on record.

Scary...good thing you managed to get on the shoulder

Had a similar experience driving my dad's dodge ram while hauling two polaris rzrs (side by side four wheelers) in 70mph traffic. Definitely a scary event that could have gone bad if there were inattentive drivers behind you.

Hopefully you get something figured out.
