Rear Main Seal / PCV Question

So.......My CEL came on and my code was P2279 Air intake leak at idle. After seeing the dreaded main seal oil puddle on the ground I troubleshot it to a bad diaphragm on the PCV. I replaced just the diaphragm because thats all the local auto zone carries. The idle is now steady and smooth but the code I get now is P2187 System too lean at idle. Now my guess its either I need the entire PCV replaced or the main seal is causing it. The Main seal is not dripping as much but still a little. What are the odds my main seal is still ok or should I prepare to change it ? Your thoughts ?

Thanks

If it got blown out then I think you have to replace it, I don't think it'll fix itself on it's own

Obviously it won't fix itself but is there a chance it may stop leaking if it wasn't fully blown or is it safe to say if it was leaking from the excessive pressure, it is blown now and won't stop dripping even though I corrected the excessive pressure ?

You now have a weak spot where air can escape, and enter. At some point you could get lean codes, or who knows what else. Best bet is to start saving $$$ to replace that seal. I was quote $600 labor, plus the seal on my car. But in for a penny, in for a pound, and I got other work done at the same time.

Once the rear main has started leaking it won’t stop, it will get worse over time, as the flywheel and clutch (if you’re manual) have to come off to replace it, you’d be wise to renew these too, oil WILL get onto the clutch while it’s leaking! Use the newest revision rear main as it’s a better design, but be sure it’s fitted as per the latest workshop manual instructions, because if not it will leak again as soon as you start the car and there’s about 6 hours labour involved!

Wow, youre lucky. My RMS was almost $1400 out the door...

$200 PCV (OEM), $110 RMS (iAbed), 10 Hours labor, they had the car for 2 days. I am DSG. But I got quotes from 4 other places and they all wanted $1,200 or more. Dealer price was laughable.

Ya $600 labor is very good. My bill for RMS, PCV, DMF, and labor was a shade under $2k at an indie shop. DMF alone is over $500.

I got a 6sp manual, which is cheaper than the DSG for this kind of service.

But I also did the clutch, and LSD install, so final bill was around $3k

I watched my buddy at this shop do a R&R on a tranny and rear main seal, I wasn't there all the time, he short cutted it, the job is alot less than 10 hours. He spent time making sure it was installed right.

Just saying.

My local VW specialist fitted my new rear main, clutch, DMF and PCV and charged 6 hours labour! Done by a highly experienced ex VW tech with absolutely no short cuts.
