Secondary cat delete and remap options

Golfr20

Passed Driver's Ed
I've got a bit of a dilemma... at the moment I've got the secondary cat taken out but it's running rough and have been advised it needs mapping to stop this.

Only problem is I don't really want a remap as I'm not looking at sinking too much into the car, all I want is for it to be loud and run smoothly.

Is there a way to make the car run smooth without a full remap? OR do I get the secondary cat put back in and opt for a back box delete

Current setup is secondary cat delete and res delete, not bad noise but could even be louder tbh

Help!!

I will add that i have the run flap delete tune as well which alters idle

Yes it's a mk6 golf r and runs quite lumpy since getting it taken out.

What is the run flap delete tune? I know with a tune I can get it sorted, but id rather not tbh as it opens a can of worms that I want to avoid.

Ah so its not tuned currently with an exhaust?

Im just disclosing that I have a run flap delete tune to disclose my setup and why it runs fine on cold start. It is a tune if you remove the runners on the intake manifold for a better engine start and idle.

If you have no tune I would suggest shopping for one. You wont have any issues!

Yeah so not tuned which seems to be the issue.

Are there any other benefits/disadvantages of the run flap delete?

So I assume there is no option than to get a tune, or put the cat back in?

Research the run flap delete, its something you wont really take advantage of unless youre at 2+ levels. So disregard that.

I would suggest looking at the Hp, whp, torque, reliability stats of some companies and choose a tune that suits you.

Totally up to you with putting the cat back or getting a tune.

Personally, race car for me and I would just get a stage 1 tune. Research companies first. If youd like to PM me on which I’d recommend feel free. I dont want to throw out tuning companies names on here and start one of those war threads lol

Removing the secondary cat and resonator shouldn't make the car run rough. I think you might have another issue at play here..

I could be wrong, but in my experience, if everything is working properly and the only thing you did was remove the secondary cat and resonator, then the only thing that should happen is an engine light for catalyst efficiency and if anything, the car might run a bit lean.

The engine light in this scenario can be removed by using an O2 spacer..

Any engine light?

Okay, what could the issue be?

I've had it looked at by a specialist and they said it was because of the cat, think they checked everything and saw nothing else obvious. No check engine light or anything like that, so I am a bit confused where to start.

They said it would need mapping to run smoothly, which seemed to make sense at the time.

Hard to say based on just your description of running "rough". Do you mean at idle or when driving? When driving how's partial throttle versus WOT? Is it misfiring? Does the outside temp change the way it behaves? engine warmed up or cold, does it run the same..

Could be so many things.. I'd start by looking for a vacuum or boost leak (pressure/smoke test), wonky DV, exhaust leak, plugs, coils etc...

By rough I mean idle when it's warm, sometimes it can get a bit shaky if I leave it idling for a while. It will rarely do it when cold.

Doesn't misfire at all, and WOT is fine. Throttle at low revs can be a bit unresponsive but I put that down to the revs more than anything.

When you say wonky dv what do you mean? I have a forge recirc valve but I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

Plugs/Coils have been changed, but never smoke tested the turbo/engine but rather not pay to diagnose something if I've been advised it's the cat?

You have to give the ecu a chance to catch up. You'll need a straight pipe to replace the cat with the O2 sensor port and the sensor adapter that gets the O2 sensor out of the direct exhaust flow. Then your ecu should be able to remap itself. I found doing the exhaust and intake in steps 2 weeks apart gave the ecu time to reprogram the fuel trims on it's own. You should notice an improvement in the trims in a few days of basic driving (no WOT balls to the walls for a few days! :)

So if it's just a secondary cat removal it won't have this effect?

Wasn't thinking about full straight pipe to be honest, but if it cures the rough idle and is louder then it's a win win?
