DIY Volkswagen Option Codes/VIN Decoding

Some people may already know these two things but I just found out about them last night so I figured I would share.

VIN Decoding

This one isn't too special, but you can punch your VIN# in on this site and it will give you some detailed information about your car.

Option Code Decoding

Somewhere in the trunk area of most/all Volkswagens is an ID tag that has lots of info about your specific car (engine ID, paint code, option codes). On my car (and I assume all MK6 GTI's) it is under the left side of the styrofoam U shaped thingy in the spare tire area.

I had trouble getting my styrofoam piece out due to my Unibrace XB but I managed to get good enough photos to read most of the info on the tag.

Some of the info seen here:
VIN: [blurred out]
Sales Model: 5K1 9W2
Engine Code: CBFA
Trans. Code: KZS
Paint Code: LA7T

This info is needed if you are using ElsaWin but can't lookup your car by VIN.

These are the option codes. You can enter them on this site to learn what they all mean.

I see you have an option in your car for "Tropical Zones" it is the 0Y2 code. So I'm assuming your car was made not for the northern regions?

Not sure what that means. I'm in New England. Definitely not a tropical zone...

edit: Found this -

(0Y1) Climatic zones: Standard climatic zones.
(0Y2) Climatic zones: Tropical zones.

Remember guys....cars are often exchanged amongst dealers so that isn't always the case. It can be made for a dealership up in Boston but they may do a trade with a VW dealership in Miami. Stuff like that.

I actually have one of these on its backing in the glove box. Good to know what the codes mean.
