Warped rotor... twice in a year with VWR Racing brake set...

Ready to race!
Guys, my specs are in my addy.

Basically I have the VWR Racing kit:

https://www.gmpperformance.com/index.cfm?PG=detail&PID=249907

And I've had 2 warp rotors in the past 12 months.

I drive the car perfectly normally to work exclusively, I don't track it. I never slam the brakes.

I would like to know if this brake set is notorious for having this problem ? It isn't cheap at all.

Thank you.

Actually I have another question.
After a few days of not using the case, when I want to use it again, I start the engine, engage the gearbox in Drive mode, and release the brake pedal. At which point, the car will not move just yet, I will have to press the throttle pedal a little bit, and will hear a slight "claak" sound coming from both the front left and front right wheels. As if something needing to "degrip". Then I drive normally. This only happens after several days of not using the car.

Any idea what this is ?...

Usually happens in colder weather or after wet conditions. It feels like the car is stuck and it can be pretty loud.

I can't help you with the brakes. I hope you get that sorted out soon though:thumbsup:

Could be your lug bolts are on too tight. The whole hub will warp at 120lb-ft, the rotor could warp even sooner. Spec is 80lb-ft.

EXACTLY. Especially after wet conditions, and yes it can be loud indeed !

What is the cause of this though ? ANything I should worry about ?

Ok thank you let me suggest this to my friendly garage specialist.

I got mine for 2 years and not wrapped, spirited driving most of the time.. However I just noticed I start having heat cracks on both side but not serious enough yet to replace them.. I suspect cleaning the car after a long drive probably caused it..

thanks marxan. COuld you possibly post a picture of those "heat cracks" ?

I noticed some dark cracks too, or at least this is what it looks like.

Are you sure they are warped? What are your symptoms? Did you bed the pads properly after replacing?

I ask because; last month I drove 500 miles in a downpour. The car then sat for a week in the driveway. When I pulled out of the driveway, the pads / rotors made all sorts of noises and I felt a terrible judder / vibration when I applied the brakes. I thought the rotors were warped.

I took the opportunity to inspect my brake system and re-lube my caliper bushings. To make a long story short, the issue was resolved after going out and following a re-bedding procedure.

What seemed to be warped rotors was just uneven build-up of material on the surface of the rotor.

I did however order new rotors since mine are corroding pretty bad. But until I install them, the car stops on a dime again.

It's happened to myself and others and I've never heard of it leading to problems. I think it's caused by rust from the wet conditions.

Thank you, I think it makes sense. What you're saying is that some kind of a thin layer of rust would form after rainy days between the rotors and the pads, correct ?
I live in HK which is an extremely humid area of course.

I appreciate the detailed response eldiablo.

Well, in fact, I am not the one who suggested the warping first, I had left my car at my friendly garage specialist for some upgrades during my holiday, when upon my return he said that he noticed that when braking, "the car would have some slight vibration, generally a symptom of warped rotors".
I then drove the car and paid attention, and indeed this is the case. Well, since I didn't notice it before he told me, it is not "that" serious. Yes, the car is vibrating yes, with some strange noise as well.

Unlike you however, in my opinion the car doesn't stop as well as before. I know because there is this straight line near my house, where I know what speed I reach (fast) and when exactly, at which point I need to break just in time before reaching the roundabout in the end, and one day it almost ended badly :D. For my casual driving to and from work, the brakes work absolutely fine enough. But their efficiency has decreased, I think I can tell.

I am also concerned that the vibration may damage other parts of my car in the long run.

Keep in mind that the vibration may be eliminated and brake performance dramticlaly improved (as in my case) by simply following a brake pad bedding procedure.

After my rainy road trip, the vibration was terrible and stopping performance was very bad. I followed standard bedding procedures and they are once again stopping like new.

See here for more information on bedding procedures... probably worth checking before replacing the rotors. It's not easy to warp a rotor.

Awsome, thank you ! With my brakes, should I follow the Bedding-in Street Performance Pads or the Bedding-in Club Race or Full Race Pads procedure ?

Cheers

It is highly unlikely you warped those rotors, they are massive. The transfer of brake pad material to the rotor occurs over normal use with certain pads materials more than others. This pad material sticks to the rotor unevenly in splotches / clumps, creating an uneven and inconsistent braking area on the rotors. The result is vibration and juddering and it feels like a warped rotor but it is not warped.

I have had a number of aftermarket brake kits on cars and just as suggested to you going through the bedding process may remove that pad material stuck to the rotors. If not just use a block of wood and some emery cloth and remove the material. You can see the material on the rotor, just have a look. You will see what looks like black streaks of the pad material on the rotor. No way you are warping those rotors driving around on the street.

Try switching pads - an excellent pad if available for your set would be the Endless MX-72, you probably will not have the problem with these pads depositing material on the rotors and they are great for the street.
