I would rather not, a wheel w/o airbag doesn't do much for me.....

Depends on the wheel. The flat-bottom sport wheel and round wheels are different and WILL NOT transfer between the 2. The airbags are different shapes
Well, I found a few airbags listed on ebay for around 250, so I would say 400+shipping for just the wheel. As for getting the multi-function buttons to work I *THINK* that the steering wheel control module has to be a 'highline' model Here is a link about it. and it may also require some vag-com coding.

i hate to threadjack, but what flat bottomed wheel do you have that doesn't have buttons?
No prob, It comes on some euro models, and apparently base model GTI's since 2011 which just seems like decontenting at it's best
