1.4 TSI twincharge 118kw EA111 : 372x misfires cyl1 & several on others....1 min afte

DA

After having some misfires with my racechip plugged....I decided to renew my spark plugs....using BKR6EIX gapped to a really tight 0.7mm.

(The old BKR6EIX were used 10,000kms and gap already getting big 0.80-0.85mm)

1 week after plugs renewal....I plugged-in racechip again.

Then after toll booth I tried flat out in gear 2-3-4-5 tiptronic (maybe around 15-20seconds full throttle).

No misfires detected during full throttle...good signs I thought....renewing the plugs after 10k is good.

But 1 minute after that....at normal cruising rpm 1800-2000rpm (5th-6th gear)....at the end of toll way....I noticed as many as 46 misfires from cyl1 (2x 23misses).

[11/14, 1:38 PM] KK Alt: That 2x23 misses in cyl1 happened in just about 50-60 seconds
[11/14, 1:46 PM] KK Alt: Then I exit toll way & I kept monitorig the vcds....misfires from cyl1...getting even more crazy.

From toll exit to my house is about 10 minutes (4km drive).
Since uneven road surface & traffic...I drove quite slow.

In those 10 minutes & 4kms drive (with speed mostly 5-20km/h in 1st & 2nd gear only)......I got a lotttt of misfires :

Cyl1 = total 328x misfires (highest count was 63x)
Cyl2 = 1x mis
Cyl3 = 7x mis
Cyl4 = 4x mis

Idling is getting rough, a bit wavy engine run.
Lucky no CEL came to light & I managed to get home without any cylinder shutdown.

I ran vcds auto scan at home and got :

From engine module :
000262 / P0106 Implausible signal G71
000768 / P0300 Random/multi cyl misfires - intermitten
000769 / P0301 Cyl1 misfires - intermitten

From ABS module :
03388 ECM / Pressure information
01177 ECU / 013 check DTC memory.

I then reset all & unplugged racechip.

This is the scan results :

After that 46x and 328x cyl1 misfires....car was not in stable condition....even racechip was already taken out.

There were times you can drive normal (very little misfires).

But there were times you can have quite a lot (although not 300x....but still many misfires in cyl1....maybe 15-20x per 25-30km trip).

When these many misfires going on....usually followed by high fuel adaptation (partial).
Can be as high as -15% during idle on traffic light.

Time of misfires also unpredictable....morning/day/evening.....also they came on and off.

Sometimes many misfires with high fuel adaptation -15% to -25% with a bit wavy engine rpm (even I logged -15% during idle stop with ac off) and a bit fuel smell in exhaust.

Sometimes very little (almost normal) with normal fuel adaptation such -2% to -5% during idle stop (even ac on).

Any ideas what happens to this car?

Is it cyl1 ignition coil became unstable?
I just ordered new NGK U5014 waiting to come (I changed all ignition coils to 03E905115E red coils last year)

Is it injector or HP/LP fuel pump problem ? Then why cyl1 suffer so much compared to other cyls ?

Any opinion ?
I greatly appreciate any help/thoughs from anyone.

Thank you.

Regards
Kent

Ready to race!
Swap the pencil coils around (move cylinder 1 pack to 2) and see if the misfires move with it - if they do, you know you have a bad coil.

With this engine which is known to crack pistons on the ring land, next step i would perform is a compression test.

Also check your MAP sensors. There are 3; post J808 mixture flap, post inter-cooler and on the intake manifold (the one that has the fault on your scan). On mine, I had a small vacuum leak from the brake servo resulting in misfire on Cylinder 1 during idle. Could also be the cause of your problem.

Read up on SSP359 to know more about your engine.

Hi Blower.

Thanks...I just realized I changed coil packs on cyl1/cyl4 (06E905115E china no brand)....due to misfires with chip plugged-in.
And it got worse after that even without chip.

Swapped again with old coils (also 06E905115E china no brand).....improves a lot but still misfires at low rpm.
Cyl1 reduced to about half
Cyl4 reduced about 70%,

So far driven at low rpm and sometimes full throttle (no mis at full thr)....but have not try anything with chip-on.

I am waiting my NGK U5140 to come....then I will try to plug the chip & test with full throttle.

Thanks for your advice.

Also will do compression test later....any tips on how I should do it or any reference figures I should pay attention to?

Hi mataempat.

Thanks for the advice.
Actually also thinking to check MAP G71 as it regularly shows on vcds) also will try to ask VW to check any leaks on servo.

In your case....where was the leaks came from actually?

BTW are you also in Indo (Jakarta)?

Thanks a lot.
Really appreciate it.

Really appreciate it.

It was the brake booster pump that was leaking. Had to replaced the entire servo.

Compression test wise, you should be looking for anything between 150-200psi (10-14 bar) on each cylinder.
170psi being about the norm for a good version of this engine.

When testing, pull the fuse for the fuel pump control unit (J538) - fuse position should be listed in your manual....alternatively lift the rear bench seat and just pull the connector to the controller block on the pump.
Remove coils, all sparks and turnover engine a few times to drop pressure in fuel rail.

Then proceed with your compression tester. Turn over engine at least 5 times before taking a reading.

If you don't disable the fuel pump and perform above procedure then you can get a false reading via air fuel mixture - which will be a lot lower than above 170psi.
