2013 Golf R RSR Clutch Install Question

So I ordered all the parts for my RSR Clutch install and I think I have some user error going on here. I have installed a number of NON VW clutches but this is my first VW.

With that said I am working to go stage 2+ and eventually TTE420 turbo and decided since my stock clutch was slipping in 6th gear with stage 1+ Unitronic tune I would get a new clutch installed. Here is the parts I am working with.

So I did the install and bled the clutch and although the transmission goes into gear with the car off it will not go into gear when the car is running. I suspect either I still have air in the throwout bearing (yes I bench bled it but some squirted out upon reassembly) or maybe the throwout bearing is bound up with the pressure plate or maybe I was really dumb and put the disc on backwards? Ideas are welcome before I pull the transmission again.

Just to update the thread I dropped the transmission again and there it was.... I pulled the pressure plate and what did I see? Yes and yes again the disc was installed backwards. I even know how important it is to double triple ensure this is not the case but still in my tired state put it on incorrectly. The best part about it is that the Sach disc says gear side on it and being as tired as I was I still put it on engine side. I am putting the trans back in and hope to report back a successful install.

Some note to date that are specific to the MK6 Golf R only.

Do yourself a favor and drop the subframe. If you have the GTI you can easily leave it in but with the Golf R its way way way more labor.

If you drop the subframe as you should then you dont have to remove the driver side axle flange only disconnect the axle which keeps trans fluid from coming out.

Leave the Haldex attached to the transmission. Trying to line up two splines is insane and the haldex does not add that much weight to the trans considering and reinstalling takes a fraction of the time.

The rear drive shaft ensure you unbolt the two bolts midway down the driveline and this will give you a lot more movement of the rear driveshaft to get it out of the way.

Good to hear you figured it out. It's usually something obvious when something goes wrong. Sorry you had to pull your transmission twice! Thanks for the advice, I'll use it later.

Thanks Church was a tired mistake for sure and the hardest part to swallow was I know better but hey we are just human so I am good with it.

On a side note the car is all done and she shifts like butter. Engagement is quick off the floor and pedal feel is to me at least is basically stock weight and I haven't even put any real miles on it to see if gets better.

Overall outside of my mistake it would have been super easy day job if I knew the tips mentioned above. If you haven't changed a clutch its easily two days because your bound to be slower and take off more than you should.

Last note.... A second hand is really needed to make quick work of pulling down the transmission and getting it back up.

Getting it back in with the Haldex attached I used my transmission jack from Harbor Freight to get it up and partially in and then a second hand kept it in place while I removed the jack and got under it and used my legs to do the old wiggle the trans to get the spline in trick. Outside of that I didn't need any help.

Good luck to whom ever takes this on. Its not to bad and saves a ton of money.

About how long did the job take you?

To re-pull the transmission and adjust the disc took 8 hours total. Thats full tear down, drop of transmission and reinstall and full reassembly as well as garage cleaned up.

Tools and know how since having to do it once already played a big role.

Electric impact gun
Air tools

1st time I spread it over a weeks time off and on but had I did it all at once it would have been two days since I didnt know how much to take off to make room.

Clutch is broken in and I love it. Excellent pedal feel (like stock) and it seems to handle stage 2+ power no problem. All I can say is its worth it to me.
