Maloneyy's 2014 GTI

Hello all,

I'm gonna be starting a very slow, yet hopefully picture full, build thread. I tried doing so with my last car and well, that forum just became a nut house and I never cared to post or even browse there at all. Just from browsing here these last few months, this place is kinda cool. I've owned a decent amount of cars, MK3 GTI, B4 Passat manual VR6, e46s, an e36 vert, EG hatch, Ruckus, Bagged and Bodied Standard cab Hardbody just to name a few, over the past years of my driving life and although some were very short, some lasted a good while. Mainly my Miata :threadjacked: << Story of my life.

I owned it since June of 2009, and it was completely stock when I purchased it. It was a car I learned to wrench on, customize, and make my own. From the countless sets of wheels, coilovers, being painted over and over again, I don't think I left a bolt untouched on that car. I drove this shit out of it and never missed a chance to slide with the friends on late night shenanigans and burnouts where it wasn't sketchy. Everyone literally knew me becuase of that car and still talk to me about it and how I shouldn't have sold it. I sold it in February of 2017 and I had my eyes set on a GTI (starting back from my first SOWO experience in 2014.) I've always liked these cars but I test drove a 2015 at the dealership I actually bought my 2014 at.

Picking it up June 22, Ironically the same day I got my Miata in 2009.
2014 GTI Certified Pre-Owned, Deep Black Pearl, DSG Wolfsburg Edition with 18,202 miles on it when I test drove it.
My only requirements are I wanted the plaid interior, DSG so the wifey can drive it, lower mileage, 4 door, no sunroof, not red. I got what I wanted.

Only Mods so far is me building my stealthbox. I am coming from a 1996 VR6 Passat wagon GLX 5 speed that honestly, I loved but I wanted newer and better. I had a loud system that was stupid clear and you could here from a while away. I had a JL Audio XD800/8v2 amp running in 4 channel mode to Hertz Hi Energys with a JL Audio XD1000/1v2 powering a pair of JL 12W3v3 subs in a 5 cubic foot box tuned roughly to 32 hertz. It was what I wanted and I kinda miss it. But the OEM upgrading that I have done so far is suiting my needs
On to photos of said box:

I sold my XD800/8v2 to fund my new amp an XD700/5v2 and a JL 10tw3v3D4 sub, grille and bass knob. Amp is under the driver seat kinda placed there for now. Will be doing more down the road so it's fine.

I tinted the windows with Llumar Ceramic film at 15% light passage and installed my Escort Passport IX radar with smart hardwire cable.

I also work at Freemans Car Stereo, so custom-ish stuff is what I like to do. I don't get to work on my own cars very much, but I plan to be thorough on this car. It's not going anywhere anytime soon. I loved this car before I bought it and anyone who knows me knows how bad I have wanted it.

Future plans will be determined mainly by what money I save, but a house is first on my list. I mainly want Air, wheels, stage 2 tune with extra requirements, exterior goodies and quite a lot of other things as well.I know doing it right the first time means waiting and I'm not 17 anymore with no bills that wants instant success. Hopefully I can add to this forum and make it better than it was!

Ready to race!
Looking forward to watching your thread and build move along. Like you, I fell in love with the GTI, but I'm still looking for the right one. I like to hear your methodology of going about the build. Doing it right (but maybe slower) is refreshing; with a wife and two young kids, I know exactly how you feel.

I bet that system is killer BTW!

Nice! Looking forward to seeing what you have planned for the GTI, considering how your Miata ended up. Subscribed.

Small update. I got my iPad dash about 90% done. I ordered a flocking kit so it has a suede look under where the iPad goes when it's not docked in the dash.I need to find a better color that matches that OEM flat surface so I don't have to go and pint everything else that touches this panel.

I started by pulled the air duct, ac controls and trim and center dash bucket out and placing it on the table and started mocking.

Got it in, and started moulding it and finished in some SEM trim black we had laying around hoping the color would match. It does, but, it doesn't.

Mounted in the dash.

I also got rid of my aux input in the center console to mount my bass knob (which is a volume control for time being)

As of right now, that's it. Nothing big. Gonna start working on my door speakers since I have everything I need. Just need to plan a few things on what I might or might not due. Once I make my move further south and purchase a house, they cooler mods will come like tuning and mechanical upgrades. Which i've very much excite about!

Been a little busy with work and life. Got a badgeless grille and took the emblems off the back and got the gloss black VW emblem as well as the glass style rear wiper delete.

Got a Unitronic intake from a buddy since I did the sub enclosure and false wall in his 2010 CC. It makes such awesome turbo noises now, I couldn't be happier.

And then this past weekend we got a few guys together for some mountain runs (Couple of M3s. gt350r, another GTI, Miata, Subaru, Mazdaspeeds and some others. Definitely gonna be going more of the functional route with this car. It handles great for stock, I can't wait to get better suspension and more power. Only downfall was the fog this weekend. Oh well, theres always the next time which will be soon!

I took the iPad out and put the factory back in for reasons. It got old pretty quick and I really just enjoy that OEM feel for now. Later I'll get something a little nicer.

I took advantage of Black Friday deals and got me a CTS 3” turbo back. Install took roughly 2 1/2 hours to do and honestly was super easy. Only grip it’s really close to the rear (subframe I guess?) and it has a very slight rattle. I can’t adjust it out no matter how much I try but the tone and sounds make it ok. I’ll get some header wrap and make it go away soon.

I also won a Kenwood DNX994s at our company Christmas party and put it in today.

And now I have (some) gauges!

How did you set up the gauges in the stereo touch-screen? It's pretty neat.

Basically with iDatalink you tap into the data wires on the OBD2 port and it reads the vehicles canBus system. It only allows on the screen what the car allows. They have an assortment of other vehicles it works with and a lot of aftermarket radios allow the use of this module vs other data boxes.

Small update.
Went Stage 2 with the COBB AP

Got my DSG fluid and an oil change at 35k miles.
Swapped my XD700/5v2 amp out for a new JL Audio VX1000/5i. Processing is so much better.

Other than that not much has changed. Getting new tires tomorrow and throwing the Terrible OE PZeros away finally. Getting the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500s. Excited to say the least.
