Walked into a dealership...and left empty handed

It's been said before, but you really shouldn't spend every last bit of that 19K on a car. You should have an emergency fund to fall back on, should something come up.

Listen, you're obviously good at saving money, so save some in an interest-bearing account and only put down 11-13K down on the car. Finance the rest and have a feeling of assurance that you have money in the bank in case something* comes up.

Like any advice in this forum, it's free. Take it or leave it.

Hope you get a price you can live with, but 19K is laughable for a 2011 or 2010.

* something doesn't mean a bunch of "emergency" mods to the car.

Quirk Volkswagen in Braintree MA
2010 4dr Black GTI, sunroof, protect kit (mats and spash gaurds?..)
$23,777

Just send an email to the guys at Quirk. Right off the bat they gave me 23,777 as the price, no f***ing around. Even if you don't go with them, you can bring that price back to Norwood and be like.. Ok, now what.

If you want the best deal in New England call John at Valenti VW in Mystic, Ct. If there is a 2010 GTI at any dealership he will find it, get it fast and give you the best price anywhere. That's where I bought my 2010 GTI.

Yeah, this is the information age.

Last time I had bought a car, the internet was good for: 1) porn, and 2) emailing porn to your buddy. Now you've got Edmunds, cars.com, sites like this site and blogs galore. Everyone who puts in a little homework knows how much a car is worth, how much their car is worth, what rates they can expect.

Know your product, know the invoice, know it's desirability. Know what your talking about. Get pre-approved through your bank. 8k knocked off of a 45k car is feasible. 8k off a 27k car, not so much.

Get financing pre-approved through your bank/credit union, 1) so you know your lending desirability, and 2) so you have a number you can compare what the finance guys at the lot bring back to you. Now is a magical time where buying new and financing makes almost more economic sense as buying a 2-3 year old used up-front.

My hat goes off to car salesmen; I can't imagine how stressful it is at the end of the month, particularly after the last two years of economy we've had. Y'all must love people and cars much more than I do. I'd last about 1/2 a day; I've got a minimum threshold for bullshit.

Car salesmen aren't in the business to make friends, and even if they insisted, trust me they aren't my type. They sell more cars than you buying cars so they def know all their sleazy stuffs. If aggressive negotiation is your style, then keep at it and make it work for you. Don't get your ass reamed out and get all torn up because they would happily give it to you...with pleasure.

Start low and work your way up. Sure 19k is a bit aggressive but I 'd just keep working toward your base line. I'd rather be hated but respected instead of feeling like an ass for paying too much afterward. I 'd rather burning bridges than burning up.

Bullshit is all a part of the game at the stealership.

I'm sure that you can get all done up City Golf or Jetta for 19K lol. Hey! At least you'd be in a VW.

So whats the best way to buy if you have a trade ?

There is no best way to buy when you have a trade. Sell it outright.
If you do and your shopping around look at the bottom line. Not selling price or trade in allowance. I know it sounds stupid but I sold many cars because the customer said them SOBS wanted give me $500 for my car Sooo I would come back with Great news my appraiser loves your car and will give you $1000 for it. I sold the car for $1000 more than the other dealer but I sold them on what the old car was worth.

uh, yeah.. 19k?? wow.. that is ambitious.

I got a 2010 2 door, charcoal gray, CPO with 9k miles on, manual, upgraded sound, etc. for 23k. Full warranty up to 75k miles.. It was 25k out the door. Not bad for essentially an almost new car with warranty for 5 years. If you're budget is below 20k you should go Japanese or American.. If you want to see the show, you have to pay the admission..
