Jay's Build Journey

Hi all, I'm new to this forum and would just like to introduce myself by starting my own build thread, so here goes! :D

Coming from a JDM background, I've always admired the diversity of the German car scene, particularly the VW and BMW scenes - so many different tuning styles and communities built up around the same platforms.

Nearing the end of 2013, I was searching for a new car. There were a few requirements that I needed:

- German with a large aftermarket community for tunablity and light modding,
- Relatively swift, character, drivability and handling,
- Good on fuel for a daily driver,
- Mature, refined yet with a hint of aggressiveness and boyish nature should I feel in the mood to give it a bit of ragging (Time to grow up! ),
- Comfortable and practical,
- Nice interior,
- 5 doors,
- Limited budget.

At first I went straight for the typical hot hatches. However, many of them either didn't fulfil what I needed for a daily drive or were too expensive. At the end, I was left with the Golf GTD.

When I first took the GTD out for a test drive, although it was a diesel, I was thoroughly impressed. Although it wasn't as fast as many of the cars I've driven, it had ample torque for both sensible driving and country-road fun. On top of this, the engine was incredibly smooth, quiet and responsive (besides the turbo lag), the cabin was quiet and comfortable, the seats were lovely and it is so spacious. Coupled with the Kenwood DNX520VBT, it pretty much ticked all my boxes.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I took delivery at the beginning of January 2014, and it's story begins.

From dealers:
- Black GTD 170CR
- 18" Charleston wheels
- Kenwood DNX520VBT
- Window tints
- OEM front lip
- Usual business

Interior Cosmetic Mods:
- JDM Broadway 300mm Flat blue tinted rear view mirror
- Full interior LED Conversion
- GTD Seat inserts
- LED Tailights
- Vagcom gauge sweep
- Vagcom Large digital speedometer
- WIFI OBD2 Connector using DashCommands on iPhone

Exterior Cosmetic Mods:
- Replica 15 LED Headlights with 4300K HID's
- LED plate lights (originally had the complete housings, however they lit up the whole road behind me so I switched em for LED bulb replacement which still give a crisp white light without being so bright)
- Red GTI Pinstripe :D:D
- Rear badge body coloured vinyl inserts
- Heko wind deflectors

Mechanic Mods:
- GTI twin-tipped backbox/muffler
- GTI Diffuser
- APR VWR Springs (Approx. 30mm)

Engine:
Stage 1 remap: 220bhp, 450NM torque

Planned Mods:
- Osir Telson GT6-S Spoiler
- Wheels [undecided - most likely 3SDM 0.01 or OZ Ultraleggera]

Love the GTD, wish we got them in the states. Clean build so far.

Thank you, nothing crazy yet! Yeah I've heard a few times about people wishing to have the GTD across the pond. The mk7 GTD will be available, right? Although personally I prefer the mk6

I didn't think we were scheduled to get the GTD, maybe I'm wrong, but I wouldn't buy a Mexican made mk7 even if I thought it looked good. If or more likely when I buy another golf, it will have to be an R32. I'd love a sequential turbo VR6.

Oh really? That sucks..although you guys also get many many many nicer cars over there than here. Last year I was dying for a genesis coupe, the new one. Then i looked at the GT86/FRS/BRZ triplet but then they just weren't as practical as what i needed for a dd. I actually have a mate who has an R32 v6 on coilovers and other fancy stuff. It's so nice!

Had the car remapped recently by a UK forum recommended company. Results:

Original:
170 bhp, 350nm/258 ftlb torque, 0-60 mph in 7.9 seconds

Tuned:
220 bhp, 450nm/332 ftlb torque, 0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds

Whilst still getting 72 mpg on the motorway! Definitely a worthy purchase

No problem dude! Glad i could help. Have you managed to source a set? I'm not too sure, it doesn't specifically say. But I am very happy with the drop, 1 finger gap now. At first there was a little bit of rake but because a diesel engine is naturally front heavy, it balanced out

Very very nice car. Good work sir.
And that remap must feel amazing. Fantastic numbers.
And good call on putting on the red GTI grill strips.

Years ago when I was back home, I was looking at a mk4 GT TDI and that felt like a beast with its 150bhp. Diesels just drive and feel so different to the petrol equivalents. And they are much than the diesels the US gets.
I ended up getting a mk1 Seat Leon Cupra. Another fantastic car I loved.

Hi Steven!
Yep, managed to hit 0-60 in 6.2 seconds! More torque than a Golf R! Love it. Took it to a VAG Specialist and he was surprised at how linear the power delivery was

So I went ahead and ordered a set of these last week, as soon as i got them through the post i fitted them within the hour, taking about 1.5 hours. Totally love them! Comes with 4300k HID's. The LED's are now wired up (jumped pins 4 and 10) to act as both DRL's and parking lights and act as OEM behaviour. Completely finished off the front end. I am aware that the LED's and the 4300K HID's are slightly different in colour, but it doesn't really bother me

Here are some pictures:
