Has anyone tried this on their steering wheel?

installed on what? the plastic steering wheel on a base golf? The base steering wheel is molded 1 piece, and that part is not removeable.

That part is only for the GTI style steering wheel.

I bought that insert when I converted to a GTI steering wheel in my 2.5L.

i have seen cover plates on ebay, that just goes over the steering wheel (so it sticks up a bit)

never used it, can't comment on fit/finish/quality/longivity. Just something i came across while browsing ebay.
