Anyone know how much weight needs to be in the passenger seat before the computer activates the passenger side airbag?

check owners manual... probably 70-80lbs.

The GTI is 75lbs? I remember in my Acura, I'd have a backpack on the passenger seat and it would activate the seat belt light.

Hmmm maybe my car's a sensitive little guy but when my 50lb australian shepherd sits in the passenger seat the seat belt warning starts to chime

Could there be a separate sensor for the airbag versus the seatbelt indicator?

Yes. the seatbelt sensor is designed to sound even for children in the passenger seat; some of which may be under 75 Lbs so the airbag stays off.
