2011 GTI with 93K miles


So i got the p2181 coolant CEL code.

I did some research before posting and tried everything suggested even this.

* Check Engine Coolant Temperature Sender (G62)
* Check Coolant Thermostat
* Check Engine Cooling System
o Put the key on, fan speed on 1, and push the a/c switch. Are both fans kicking on? If not, you found the problem.
o Put the key on and fan speed on 1. Does heat come out readily from the vents?
+ No. Probably the water pump is gone.
+ Yes. Probably the thermostat is gone.

Both fans kicked in when the AC is on

Heat comes out normal and hot.

Coolant is full

Temps are normal.

Anything else?

Car is running just fine.

Bad thermostat or coolant temp sensor, is my guess. or early signs of waterpump failure.

is the code intermittant or every time after clearing?

Yesterday cold start from not driving the car a full day, outside temp was 55, 5 mins into driving its when the gauge does that, after a while it settles at 190

just so you are aware that gauge is not really an accurate gauge more of a guideline. It doesnt actually show the real temp... just (low, normal, and hot) Think of it more as a 3 stage (cool is all the way left, normalish operating temp is the middle(190), and the far right means its really hot/overheating).
