Dorman 917-064 PCV Diaphragm Repair Kit saves the day

A month ago, I helped my neighbour install this Dorman 917-064 PCV Diaphragm Repair Kit on his GTI.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CFJT6AE?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

His engine has been burning alot of oil during the winter. He ordered one of these, it was a good idea, since replacement no more weekly oil top ups. Took only 10 minutes to do.

When we removed the original cap we found the diaphragm was ok, no tears or holes but the diaphragm sat crooked and deformed because the spring was out of place and sitting crooked and came out a bit bent and uneven. We replaced the old diaphragm and spring. Once you know how to do this, it is an easy check to perform during a DIY oil chance and could save you alot of money.

Lesson learnt: Check the PCV Diaphragm and spring; it may not just be a torn diaphragm, it could be the diaphragm spring out of place; causing excessive oil burning and possible other problems, like blown Rear Main Seal (RMS).

Cheers

Wow.. good find. No DIY pics eh? Straightforward? Has ge checked for play since? Is the spring stiffer than OEM?

Did you have any issues removing the cap? When my PCV failed due to torn diaphragm I took it apart to see what the insides looked like but had a lot of trouble getting the cap off. I ended up having to use a screwdriver and it chewed up the plastic pretty bad because it was on there so tight. I don't think it would have sealed good if I tried to put it back together.

If it the original it will be tight, you will need to use a couple of sizes of flat blade screw drivers to pry at least three tabs loose to get it free. Luckily the kit comes with a replacement cap as well
One trick i found was to apply pressure (push down on the cap) to the top first to help loosen it a bit before i start prying at the tabs.

Here are a few videos to help you, once you do it once it becomes incredible easy after that, well at least to me.

What's even better is they are close to the airport with free p/u... not sure if it's a storefront or not but it's minutes from me. Thanks MLue1
