I think it is more of a reference to Ford built truck engines. If I had a diesel, I'll personally skip on it and use the process in this link below.

I followed the TDIclub break-in routine (and still do). I'm @ 8500km's now and the engine has used ZERO oil and develop no smoke from the exhaust when accelerating from low rpms (2000-2500 when turbo spools).
I work at a dealership (VW) and I have seen several TDI Golf's with fewer km's on the odometer than mine which have had their engine oil topped up (1-2 deciliters). Guess them owners drove their car home on the day of delivery and nursed the engine for the following 1000miles or so...like it's stated in the manual
I drive fairly "normal" now and I use all of the rev range...That means giving it a real solid dose of right foot at least once every week! I never EVER go over 3000rpms if the engine oil is below 90 degrees and I always keep it above 2000rpms from cold. I never floor it from under 2000 rpms either...
