18" Detroits

What's the widest tire I can go with the 18' Detroits. I've got 225's on there now and was thinking maybe 245's?

I've heard from a top VW engineer that the widest you can go without rubbing much is 245/35/18

245/35/18 is only good for a wheel that is 8-9.5 inches wide. Even a 235/35/18 tire is only good for a wheel that is 8-9.5 inches wide.

The stock detroit wheel is only 7.5 inches wide. A 225/40/18 tires is good for a wheel that is 7.5-9 inches wide.

I had 245/35/18, wheels were 8.5 wide, and lowered with vw sport springs... and the front wheels will rub with this setup.

Also, like lewylou78 mentioned the detroits are only 7.5 wide. Maybe you can get away with 235/40/18... I am not sure....

And what is the physical difference between a 225/40/18 on a 7.5" and 9" rim? The tire might widen up top at the bead but its not gonna widen down at the tread. Hmmm?

Hmmm, I guess the 235's would be my safest bet when it comes time to change tires. These Pirelli's are loud tires as they were on my 08 GTI and 911.
