The biggest annoyance (in terms of lack of features) I had on my GTI was lack of auto headlights.

I mean really, its 2012 - how much more expensive is it to have a switch so your lights go off when the car does? I left my lights on and killed my batter on several occasions due to this (usually when I left early morning and it was still dark but bright by the time I got to work).

As far one of your issues, I had exactly the same problem. Often times my heat would blast only cold air unless it was all the way up to full heat. Then of course it would be very hot. I never got it checked out and never figured out what was wrong with it honestly.

OP, Ref the sound/noise issue, it could be a Soundaktor problem. VW, BMW and others put a fake noise generator against the dash at the rear of the engine bay. I've removed mine and can now enjoy real engine noises and not some fake ones based on throttle position and gear selection. You can also just remove the cable going to the Soundaktor (stupid name for a uselesss item)

OP , I'm with you... Just because you buy a car or like a car, doesn't mean there aren't things that could have been done different. There is usually a fine line between "like it" and "love it".

My like it to love it upgrade would be reducing the turbo lag. If VW would have spent the extra time and money to reduce the turbo lag in the R I'd be in the love it camp. I also hate leather seats and wish I could have chosen a different material like Alcantara inserts like on the Audi line.
