Warranty, Engine pressure issue.

Hey guys, long time lurker but I have a serious issue.

I drove from Chicago to TN on vacation on July 19th and my check engine light came on about 50 miles from my destination. I arrived at my hotel, parked in front and dropped off my luggage and then started my car. I noticed a shaking of the engine and a loss of torque at once. I drove about 100 feet, parked for the night and in the morning I came out and the car wouldn't start.

Anyway, called the local VW dealer and they picked up my car and got to work. I was scheduled to leave that monday, but couldn't - so I wound up staying for 3 extra days waiting on them to figure out what the issue was.

Turns out the engine malfunctioned, (timing chain, splintered metal inside, pressure sensor failure amongst other things)and needed to be completely replaced. (I just got the car back last night, they shipped it to me)

What should I call and ask VWOA for in recompense? I've heard of people getting extended warranties, a month of car note paid, hotel and food charges while their vacation was extended, but its all internet rumor and I don't want ask for anything crazy but I do want to like VW again.

Any help would be appreciated!

Love the site and thanks in advance guys.

So they are covering the warranty, yes? I suggest not being a dick and not 'ask' for anything.

If the work was warrantied I don't see any issue with contacting VWOA to see if they could help you out with cost of the hotel or meals.

I wouldn't be shocked if they split it with you. I wouldn't be shocked if they don't give you anything.

They definitely won't give you anything if you don't ask.

All this said, I assume you are not modded or tuned...

First of all, what year is your GTI and how many miles were on it? Also, how often did you/dealer change the oil (I'm not starting an oil change interval debate here, I'm just curious)? I think DBESTGTI mentioned that there is a TSB out for the timing chain tensioner failing suddenly and causing the timing chain to jump teeth on the cam sprocket.

Trip interruption receipts should be mailed to:
VW 24-Hour Roadside Assistance PO Box 3094
Arlington Heights, IL 60006-3094

Trip interruption is part of your roadside assistance coverage.

Lodging up to $100 per day, meals up to $100. per day, alternate transportation up to $100. per day

Asking for coverage you paid for as part of the purchase is not "being a dick".

Badass...

Just to update, its a 2012 GTI and they did honor the warranty. It had 17,000 miles on it and its about 13 months old. Oil was changed 3 times, once by the dealer @ 5k and 12k miles. Next Scheduled maintainence was 20k miles.

I'll call VWOA and see what they have for me.

Another question though, do they extend the warranty now that its a new engine inside?

F*ck, I was hoping you weren't going to say 2012. It looks like all of our engines are at risk for this failure. Hopefully, VW is in the process of or has already redesigned the chain tensioner to prevent the same flaw from causing failure in the future. Looking at the online ELSAWeb diagram, it doesn't look like the chain tensioner is the easiest component to replace either, so DIY proactive replacement is likely out of the question. The lower timing chain cover has to come off and the engine possibly has to be raised a couple of inches to gain access.

Yep and this car even had the 5000 mile oil changes that supposedly prevent catastrophic engine failures

Like I said before, a brand new engine is not going to fail because of an extra 5k miles on the oil, it will fail because of a design flaw
