The seller gave the buyer a duplicate title. It's probably a scam that involves the registered owner of the minivan (they get the van back AND $2500)

What kind of precautions do you guys take when purchasing vehicles from private sellers?

The people who were duped don't look like the sharpest tacks and likely ignored all manner of sketch circumstances. I'm not condoning the illegal conduct but some sheep are going to get slaughtered no matter what.

You'd think most people would be smart enough to transfer the title in person at a DMV office and then pay the seller.

wow they are lucky for what they on return for a free new car, not to mention, newer and probably less mileage.
