DSG Clunk Engaging Drive

Hey guys,

I've tried researching this for the last couple of days but I haven't had any luck. Hopefully you guys might be able to help me understand what is going on.

When stationary I can charge from P to R and N with no issues, however when I change in to D there is a noticeable clunk or two that comes from the DSG. (It also happens when shifting out of D).
I had a look on OBD Eleven and have seen my gear selector values are way past the maximum (Pic Below). My stage 2 (Integrated Engineering) 2010 GTI has done 165,000kms without having the clutches changed. I have tried retuning the TCU but it doesn't make any difference.

I assumed it would be the clutches since they have never been changed.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks guys!!! (Also first post, so don't judge haha)

Not sure if you can do clutch adaption in OBD Eleven but I would look into doing that. I'm also not sure if this will really help anything. I doubt bad clutches would cause a noticeable "clunk" when shifting into or out of D since they aren't really being engaged when stationary. Sounds like something is going on with a shift fork or synchro. Some noise into and out of 1st gear is normal on DSGs. The OEM clutches are pretty stout and should last a long time provided they aren't heat stressed. That is the real killer of clutches. When I installed my MFactory diff I also replaced the clutches but didn't really need to. The OEM friction and steels all looked in pretty good shape at 118k miles.

I often hear of that being clutch pack failure when you have clunks or unable to shift from D to R etc but you could have a failing mechatronics unit too. If you have no codes though and otherwise it shifts and drives normally and you've done the DSG adaptations fuck it just drive it for now lol.

Cheers guys, the car feels pretty good driving it. Only first gear doesn't engage time to time (I've never launched it). I'll just keep an eye on to see if it gets worse or blows up haha

Sounds like clutch packs could be going. I had some noise when shifting from reverse to drive, and park to reverse and backwards for both. There's still some delays in shifts by microseconds and sometimes really rough downshifts, etc so my next step if I want to even bother is just to replace the mech unit, but clutch pack replacement did cure my heavy clunking sounds.

*Update*

I took my car to a local VW specialist and the clutch pack has been replaced. It feels like new and the gear shifts are even quicker with no clunks whatsoever.

On the other hand the mechatronic unit is apparently slightly leaking near a electrical connection point. A new mechatronic unit will be needed in the future, thankfully not now.

Hi Haydos, this is the first forum I’ve came across with the same issues as me, also my tolerance have been reached, thinking to get clutch packs changed but I’m just questioning wether yours continued to work after you had the clutch done, any help or reply appreciated, thank you in advance 😊

If you're at a stage where the tolerances are pretty far from the range, clutch packs should resolve your issue. I would also recommend a mechatronics unit replacement too. I had my clutch packs replaced a few years ago and now the mech unit is going (feels like trash) and will probably destroy my new clutch packs within the next few years if left to its devices. Best to swap it all, or just buy a lightly used DSG and put that in instead since I hear mech units are still hard to come by.
