Engine Cover: Functional or Form?

Does the MK6 GTI engine cover do anything functional for the engine other than giving it a cleaner look?

I kind of prefer seeing the engine's top and coil packs. So like this member, GTItheIllest, I was thinking of keeping the cover off for now on.

However, if it has some functional purpose, such as holding down components or keeping dirt out of stuff, I'll probably put it back on.

its all in the name.. engine "cover". that's what it does. Function and asthetics.

On some cars that may cause the paint to peel on the other side of the hood due to the constant heat.

Both of those engines make my pants fit tighter in the zipper

On the R , the engine cover looks more aerodynamic, that could help to channel the air better, in the TSI sadly looks more aesthetic than functional I Believe..
