H&R Street Performance Coilovers Review

Hello and greetings to the mk6 forum!!

I will first admit that I am somewhat of a "lurker" (don't even know if I am using this term right). But I appreciate the wealth of knowledge found on this site and figured it was my turn to give back. First, my car:

2014 MK6 GTI DSG Transmission
AWE Tuning CAI
AWE Tuning stage2+ flash w/ turboback exhaust
h&r adjustable rear sway (i think it's a hollow 24mm??)
VWR springs

Background:

Had the VWR springs for about half a year and they gave me what I thought I wanted at the time. This is my second car, and my first "fast" car. I am still figuring out my preferences in some ways. I liked the modest drop, and the feeling of pre-compression that it gave to the car. They even handled a little bit better (very marginally over stock w/ rear sway). But I always felt some sort of detachment from the road, and this was the very feeling that I was trying to get rid of.

I am 28 and past the phase where I do things for the sole purpose of attention/approval. I justify the modifications that I do to my car in a different way- while greatly increasing the thrill of my driving experience is a given, I also see these mods as "safety features." I want to be able to make emergency maneuvers with confidence, to but it simply. The springs didn't give me that confidence, my car was still exhibiting a significant amount of body roll when quickly changing directions.

I decided to spend the money on coilovers. I did a bunch of research, but ultimately went with the suggestion of my AWE specialist and purchased these coilovers. It also made sense since I already had the companion sway bar from H&R. I am not too mechanically inclined, and work in a career where I am usually busy. So I wanted something that I could set and forget. I just cant see myself lifting this thing and adjusting dampening or height for the life of this car.

Review:

I came out of the shop and my car looked great. I am about 600 miles in with the new parts. My initial impressions were all muted, I understood that it may feel a little bouncy and sloppy at first. It was waaaay better than my previous set up right off the bat, but I tried my best to withold judgement.

About 300-400 miles in though, the coilovers really start to shine. I feel like I am driving a $50K+ car now. Immediately after leaving AWE, some young adults in an old and loud car were admiring the drop at a traffic light, and playfully challenging me to a race they knew they would lose. They were in admiration of my vehicle and so am I.

The specifics of changes to the driving experience are as follows:
  • Tighter feeling of the steering wheel
  • Faster and more responsiveness to subtle movements on the wheel
  • Less brake squat (I know many of you criticize the brakes on this car but I think they are okay, and they work much better with coils)
  • Reduced wheel hop under hard acceleration
  • Significantly increased stability at high speeds on the highway
  • Drastically reduced body roll and greatly increased stability when taking curves at high speed (feels like you are still going straight)
  • Because of the previous bullet, I would posit that it is a more comfortable ride for passengers during spirited driving spurts
  • Reduced front-end lift during acceleration
  • Ability to accelerate more aggresively from stop while turning

Many, many benefits. I think this was some of the best money that Iever spent. But alas, things are a matter of preference. But I absolutely 100% recommend these for anyone looking for drastically improved performance with minimal sacrifice in ride comfort.

ps. I will post pics soon
