Best thing to solve "New Car Paranoia" is go to your local big box store, find the very closest parking spot to the entrance. And then go shop for an hour....

Wallah! You now have a fresh door ding, the new car feeling will be gone and now you don't have to worry about your ride being a virgin anymore.

It's a car.

It's gonna get dings and bird shit on it.

I might obsess more if it were some exotic foreign
RWD sports car that cost more than
twice the average annual US salary, but it's not.
Common sense wins the day. Don't park it in stupid places.
Beyond that, take a deep breath and repeat after me:

"It's a car. It's gonna get dings and bird shit on it. It's O-K."

Actually I dissagree, some of us
did pay twice our OWN PERSONAL
annual salary and like to keep our things looking nice
and take pride in what we own.
Also, i want to look good everyday
that is why my GTI IS my daily driver.

Poor choice of language and not necessarily true.
Taking the precautions you have can pay off. Nothing wrong with pride of ownership.
I drove my last 2 cars for 4 yrs each without a single door ding or mark from other cars.
I, too, watched where I parked and avoided parking next to 2 door cars (their doors are longer).
Spots next to Bimmers, Lexus and MB are the best.
I also installed a clear plastic door edge guard to help me from doing inadvertent damage to someone else's car.
I've had my GTI for 9 months w/o a single ding.
And the wife's Acura is 2 years old w/o any dings.
It can be done. Enjoy your cars but take reasonable precautions, too.

and where did you get your clear plastic guards??
i really need some i have poor luck with assigned parking
and am stuck next to a cement wall and another person {who doesn't really know how to park.....):}

better idea, walk to box store, buy bigger box,
drive gti to desired location,
place bigger box over gti
and WALLAH!
easy on and off car cover w/o the chance of scratching it with dust!!

I just find the most expensive car in the lot and park next to that:thumbsup:

I do this too, or try and park next to another VW. And when those options are not available, I try to pick a wall on one side, and make as much door swing room as possible. I also try not to park next to American 2 door cars like a Camaro, where the door is long and heavy.

I'm ding/dent free still, and that's because I think and scope out where I park my car. I pity the first fool who dents my car.
