Problem starting- "ESP Error"?

Yesterday my car threw a fit. I get in the car, back it out into the street, and turn it around so I can back it into my drive way. I get back in the drive way and turn off the car. Then, less than 10 minutes later, I turn the car back on. It starts for a few seconds, and then shuts its self off. I get an error message on the dash "ESP Error". I wasnt moving, I didnt shift into D or R or anything. So I turn the car off, wait a minute and try to turn it back on. This time, the car just didnt want to turn over. I take the key out. Pop the hood and look to see if there was anything that I could see. Nothing. So I get in the car and give it one last shot. Surprisingly it turns over without a problem. I drive it to where I need to go and from then on its been fine. Any ideas of what this could have been or if I should be worried?

Preface: I had the autotech intake on for about a month, but I put the stock one back on a few weeks ago. I havent had a problem since, except for this one.

I had a problem similar to this three times, the dealer told me it's the theft protection system killing the ignition because it thinks I'm stealing it, something to do with the steering wheel lock. The third time it happened they replaced a faulty module in my steering. The most annoying thing is that it feels like a dead battery so I called AAA and they were almost there when I got it started.

I had the car up on ramps to look at the cat back before I installed it. I wonder if that caused the antitheft system to kick in or something.

holy crap!! i had the same exact problem! about 2 weeks ago as i get in my car i start it and it stalls right after. Then i try again it turned over and was about to start but stalled again. I removed the key waited a few seconds and tried again and it started without a problem. Idk why it happened especially since im 100% stock. Prob just a electrical issue.

I just experienced the same. Here is my VCDS log. Should this be considered a fluke? The car runs great. I can report that the cruise control on/off did not work while driving after the error "ESP Error, check engine" popped up. No permanent light illuminated. When I got home I ran VCDS and saved the codes. I then cleared it to drive today and rescan later. If anyone has brought there car to VW for a tech to check their cars, please report their findings.

Same thing happened to me a about a month ago. ESP error. VCDS logged some ECU reading errors. Cleared it and never happened again. Maybe GTI brain fart.

Ok, circumstances leading to this error. Raining all day, and most of the weekend. Did not drive through any large puddles that I recall. Got out of my car after driving hard all the way home. Let my dog out, and then got back in my car to go get some food. Upon returning to my car, and turning over the ignition, it did it's stupid "about to stall" flutter as it does if I turn the car off, let it sit for less than 45mins, and then turn it back over. Still haven't found the cause of that.

Anyway, turned it over, it effectively stalled out on me, and then blinked the TPMS light, CEL, and ESP:Error with a flashing wrench on the MFD. I turn the car off, and try to turn it back over, and it just cranks and cranks and cranks.

I turn it back off, and turn it over again, and it cranks right up. Pulled out the laptop, and scanned it for codes and got this below.

My mods are LED tails, and stage 2 APR with supporting mods, and no SIRIUS service on my RNS-315.

Just happened to me yesterday. Started car in the morning, and see "ESP error" in the dash display, then disappeared. A bit worried but drove off carefully. About 15 minutes later in bumper-to-bumper traffic, car stalls. Try to restart, nothing - won't even crank. Put on four-ways, turn off all accessories. Remove key, reinsert, car starts fine. Weird; will check for error codes with VCDS later today. Car completely stock, never had a single issue before.
