He maintained the car well though. In the end, maintenance is what will be the difference in long lasting turbo and supporting components as well.
Where did you hear this? I don't know of too many 100k+ Mk6's on here, but I've never heard of the stock turbos just crapping out at a certain point.
Keep the oil topped off, and the turbo should last you for well over 100k.
I'm def gonna do it. Stage 1 seems like unreal screaming value.

I now feel encouraged to investigate tuning more seriously. Friend of mine whose views on cars I greatly respect said this: Recommend against any chip tuning, your concerns are correct. Internal wastegate turbos are not meant to take extra boost.
