Driver side seat upholstery coming apart at seam

Hey everyone, I did a search on the forum on this issue, and I didn't see a related post..

Has anyone had an issue with the seat cover coming apart at the seam? I noticed it the other day, it started with a little rip, and over the weekend it has gotten worse. And I was wondering if something like this would be covered under warranty?

Any one have any suggestions on whom to contact for this sort of an issue? Has anyone else had this issue? What was the outcome?

Edit: Thanks Rellikx, I didn't realize that The image wasn't showing. Here are the drop box links:

That's one thing I'm worrying about for the seats. I have the leather, but over time with numerous egress and ingress, it'll wear away unevenly.

I'm going to guess that it will NOT be covered since it would be considered a "wear" item, like brakes and tires and such. A good upholstery shop would be a good start to have the seat repaired. You could also look into say katzkin covers or something.

IT may have been covered by the 3/36 B2B warranty, but you're well out of that with your 2011.

Bummer. I've never had happen on any of my VW's, whether cloth or leather.

haha definitely not under the powertrain warranty. If its a CPO give them a call. My dealer is a fu&king scrooge but i started going to a different one and it seems like they'll just fix ANYTHING for free.

I just got back from my dealer. I spoke to two managers, and they said the rip was from an "external influence" and it is not covered by the cpo. I guess my ass does count as an external influence..

But the problem I am having is where the tear happened. It's on the seam on the outter edge, and me sitting in it doesn't pull on the seam.

I went and talked to the parts department to see if a new seat cover could be ordered, and the lady tried to locate the part and apparently she can't find the part? does anyone out there know the part number for the fabric seat cover? All she could find are the seat slip covers... Any help would be awesome

After I picked up a used '10 GTI this summer (with small tear and some degradation in the side bolster), I went to an upholstery shop that I'd used several times in the past. The guy really knows his way in and out of cars, and is know to use some unconventional means at times. Always gets results though. He was able repair the foam no problem, but said he wouldnt touch the tear, as it's through that seam that the side airbag deploys. Too much risk of the repair job inhibiting the proper deployment of the bag. For now I'll deal with the unsightliness and have the peace of mind that I'll stand a better chance in an accident.

Good news everyone!

Sorry for the lack of updates to this thread. I was able to get the seat cover replaced under warranty. I went to an upholstery place here in Lauderill, FL, and they said the same thing that panzr15 mentioned in his post. They wouldn't touch the repair because it could affect the deployment of the airbag. So I call VW corporate. I went back and fourth with them a few times, and I also went back and fourth with the dealer a few times. And VW Corporate finally gave the ok for the repair. It took about a month for the seat cover to come in. They said they had to get the cover custom made for my car. I brought the car in on Monday morning, and got the car back Tuesday afternoon. They did an amazing job on the cover. In case anyone was wondering the part number for my car is 5K4-881-805-BH-XOX. I attached pics of the before and after (the rip got worse over the last month) and also the invoice I recieved. I took a look at the actual cost invoice, and the repair would have been around ~$700. I am very happy with the results, and the fact that VW Corporate and Palmetto 57 was very patient with me through this whole thing was amazing.

I've learned over the last few years that VW's cloth seats aren't the most durable. I had my '08 Rabbit (cloth seats) for 5 years and by the end I noticed some fraying in the butt cushion, and also some moderate scratches on the hard plastic for the seat adjustment area. This is going to sound dumb but I narrowed it down to the pants and shorts I was wearing.

If you like wearing jeans with metal back pocket buttons, it will rub up against the seat and wear it out over time. Same thing with cargo shorts that use velcro pockets. It'll be very abrasive against the cloth and threads. If something feels rough when you rub it up against your skin, just picture all of your body weight doing the same to your cloth seats.

Obviously I didn't want the same thing to happen after I got the GTI, so I went out and got new pants/shorts/khakis with plastic buttons etc. I haven't had any fraying or scuffing on the seats since. They still look brand new on mine.

As a side note I'd also avoid wearing tall boots with metal eyelits or hooks to keep the laces in place. I learned the hard way that they can scratch up the edge of the door sill area if you're not careful.
