car is worth 26 at sale. It lost 4k in value, therefore 4k loss for plac regardless of his equity, but he still makes some profit because the value of car at sale minus the loan = 13k, minus the 4k loss is approx 9k in profit like you said.

His initial out of pocket was $17000. He got $26000. After paying back the $13000 loan. He was left with $13000.

-$17,000 + $13,000 = -$4000.
