Bit by the P2015 bug

The Canuck

Ready to race!
Well yesterday the car threw a CEL, and after running VCDS, it came back with the P2015 error code. Had a small glimmer of hope in that it might be covered by the extended warranty by VW, as I didn't take possession of the car until 2014. Car has about 113,000 miles on it. Gave VWoA a call and the rep tried to argue with "leadership" that though I am 3.5 months past the time aspect, I am under the mileage. Unfortunately VWoA are sticklers for the specifics and said I am outside of the warranty.

I have a call into my local dealership, which had the intake off less than year ago for walnut blasting and other things, to see how badly of a cost it would be for them to do it. I have started to review some YouTube videos to see the process of removing the intake and replacing it myself.

My questions to the group...
- I am assuming its not a hard process to replace, just takes a solid half-day if you haven't done this before.
- I am not looking to get a performance intake (CTS, or IE), just looking for an OEM. Or are there aftermarket versions that are ok?
- Best place to purchase?
- ECS has an all in one kit
- ShopDAP has the intake and a separate install kit (ends up being a little more than ECS)
- Any of the other vendor recommendations?
- ECS indicates you might need to replace the Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor
- True that you need to do this, good practice to do, or are they trying to upsell product?
- ECS indicates you might need to replace the fuel rail if its original.
- True that you need to do this, good practice to do, or are they trying to upsell product?
- I see some people talk about replacing injectors with this being off. Is it required, or just good practice to replace since it's off?
- How do you know if you need to replace the injectors or not. I don't think mine have been replaced.
- Any other advice, tips, things to know from those that have done it, or since you are in there, go ahead and replace or upgrade ___________ ?

Also, the old fuel rail works. You’ll need to pry it into place using some leverage, but it definitely works. I went through the ordeal of getting the updated fuel rail, but it doesn’t come with the required brass fitting to make it plug and play. And there’s no part #s on the fittings. So I just used the old one.

FCP euro has lifetime replacements, so order from there if you’re planning on keeping the car long term.

So here’s an oddity to the situation. I ordered a new air filter, cabin filter and a few other things to refresh worn parts. They arrived a day after the CEL came on and gave me that code. Since replacing the air filter, the CEL has stayed off. I haven’t tried clearing the code but find it odd that that seems to have cleared it. The stock air filter was not that dirty, or at least I didn’t consider it overly dirty. Is this coincidence or am I just buying some time? Car runs fine. Don’t notice any lack of power.

So happens I'm doing my intake this week, in hopes of solving a cold weather start issue that throws a P2015 and rough idles. While I'm there, I'm going to replace the fuel injectors since it has 162,000 miles and I really don't want to have to go back in there if I don't have to. When you did the fuel injectors - do they just sort of press into the engine, and the manifold sort of clamps down on them? Videos on YouTube I saw don't really show how the fuel injectors really go back in. We got new injectors so they come with the new seals already on which is nice.

Good to know that you got the old rail to work. I got a Febi replacement manifold and will report back on whether it fit the old rail perfectly or needs to be pried into place. Did you raise the front of the car up to get the throttle body and brace off, or did you do it all with the car on the ground?

thanks,

Charlie

Yes, the friction of the seals holds the injectors in place. My brace was missing from some previous repair before my ownership. I read most dealers don’t reinstall it. It will probably be easier to get to from underneath, but you may need to remove the bumper or lip.

mine would also come and go. Stopped when I replaced it and ran the adaptation procedure through VCDS.

Thanks for the response - we did this today and the fuel injector part was easy. We lifted the front end to remove the charge pipe and the bracket underneath, but discovered our car was missing the brace and I have no idea how it would be in there anyway. Hopefully it will be OK. For the record, we used a Febi intake and it fit our fuel rail perfectly, I assume it's not the latest update manifold?

The one tool we didn't have but had to go out and get was a six-inch and three-inch 1/4" drive extensions to get our T30 down under the intake to remove the bolts.

febi is the latest revision.

your car probably already had the newer fuel rail.

only the super old model years, like 2010 and 2011 had the old rail.
