the Asus also has far better graphics, but do what you need to do. The GTX is well above the GT series, let alone the number 555 vs 560.

So the plot thickens...

The Asus has a little better graphics card, more video memory and 4 memory slot so its easy to upgrade.

The Lenovo has the separate 64GB SSHD for working and a regular one for storage, a slightly better processor but the low resolution... But I just compared to it my current laptop and the same aspect ratio and resolution is what I've been using for years.

Because the Lenovo is at a local store I'm gonna check it out, if graphics look good I'm taking it home.

the 64gb ssd is mostly for boots, and it will barely hold any more than the OS itself after patches and updates.

Asus supplies all the shit for the major companies, or at least used to. I hate my work Lenovo, but im sure they are different options/versions of it.

Ryan - my old laptop couldnt play the HD vids on it, but my new cheap $300 one I got for xmas can, so I dont think it needs to be anything too crazy to play those videos.

Not to play them, to cut them up, edit them ect. It will
Play them fine, it gets angry trying to modify them.

I found the Lenovo for $999 on the Lenovo site, free shipping, no tax, and they offer 3 year accidental damage coverage with 3 year next business day in home extended warranty for $171.

ASUS does some of the pre-built stuff still but it is no where near their private line. They are one of the big boys in enthusiast hardware delivering some of the best (most expensive) motherboards out there. 90% of my house runs on an ASUS board and has for the last 10 years. They regularly put out boards for the newest tech that retail for $300+......and they have lines of use waiting to grab one at that price....LOL

Playback of HD video is not that stressful, it's the ENCODING of it that requires RAM and a mutli-die CPU. People are strapping together HTPC systems with 8800 NVIDIA cards and XMBC. My home theatre uses a 260SC for blu-ray playback with no worries (it also has 8GB of DDR3 and a quad core clocked to 4.2Ghz LOL)

Yeah, I was going to say, Win 7 is bloated for sure, but 64GB is a bit much. Of course, Windows is like a goldfish, it will grow to the size of it's fishbowl. For fun, after about a year, save your data and wipe your OS partition. Then re-install, update and put the little stuff back in. It will be all the same data and function but will be about 10% or so smaller. It will also run faster, even if you stay on top of registry dead ends and cleaning it up. I always lock down my OS partition at 25GB for Windows 7(Which starting next month I will only have in a virtual machine on my newest laptop and no where else in my house), used to be able to do 15GB for XP. Of course I have all my Linux systems set to 20GB and most are at least half empty. And that is mostly from bloat I put in and like to have (Compiz, additional fonts and themes, conky, ect, ect.).

I had 2 bad Mobos from ASUS in a row when I built my PC :( 3rd was a charm though, replaced at no cost. I've also got a netbook from them and the thing is still fine even after a 32" CRT TV fell directly on it...that's like 60+lbs directly on the thing. Cracked a battery cell (oozes a bit) and I had to replace the screen ($40) but overall unharmed. Still has 5hr of battery life too haha

This damn GTI has put a REAL crimp in my computer hobby. I've wanted to water cool my media server, add a second HTPC for the bedroom, and finish one of the 4 custom cases I have been working on for several years.

I'll probably be stuck waiting till the first price drop on Ivy Bridge before doing my next upgrade. :(

But going WOT through winding country roads in the GTI helps me get over that. :D

I know I'm a bit late but in terms of decent deals there is always the Dell Outlet to check out. http://www.dell.com/outlet

Most are just refurbs but I've bought 3 of them now and had no issues. The Latitudes will come with 3/4/5 yr warranty's with next business day onsite repair typically. Might take some time to find exactly what you want but with my last laptop last year I got a top-end i5 with 2gb of ram and a 80gb drive w/ 3yr warranty for just over $500. Tossed in a 120gb ssd from newegg and 8gb ram and had a relatively high end laptop for under $800

My vote is for an Asus Zenbook or the new Dell XPS 13.

Mac's can run Windows with Bootcamp or Virtual mode.

True but you need to spend money on the Windows license. It's not free.

thats the other thing. Mac's hold their value better than any Windows laptop. I can sell them for 90% of value after a few months use. Like I did for my Air 11".

Macs aren't cars. There's no such thing as "holding value" when it comes to a computer. If you sold something old and used to someone for 90% of what you paid for it then it's because that person is a fool, not because of some collectable resale value.
